On October 5, the Traffic Police Department (PC08), Ho Chi Minh City Police Department announced that the 31 system camera with artificial intelligence (AI) is being installed at many key intersections in the city. After more than a month of operation, this system has shown clear effectiveness in detecting and handling traffic violations.
According to statistics, from September 1 to October 3, AI camera recorded 3,143 cases of violations of the Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety.
Common violations include running red lights, speeding, driving in the wrong lane, and stopping and parking illegally. All image data, once recognized, is transferred to the Command Center for processing, ensuring accuracy, objectivity, and transparency.
Along with the camera system applying artificial intelligence, Ho Chi Minh City currently has a network of more than 1,200 traffic surveillance cameras managed by many units. Of which, there are 530 cameras located in the central area, 9 automatic speed monitoring cameras and 47 cameras invested by Department C08 ( Ministry of Public Security ), serving to monitor speed, traffic lights, stopping, going against traffic and license plate recognition.
In addition, the Traffic Police Department (PC08) also exploited 710 more cameras from the Ho Chi Minh City Police Command Center to serve traffic management and violation handling.
Currently, Zone 1 has 412 cameras, of which 172 are working properly, 219 are damaged and 21 have been removed. Zone 2 has 201 cameras, including 23 traffic monitoring devices, 17 speed monitoring cameras and 161 red light, parking and passenger pick-up and drop-off monitoring cameras.
Unlike AI cameras that can automatically identify violations, conventional cameras today still have to manually extract data when requested, which is time-consuming and labor-intensive.
To overcome this limitation, in the coming time, the Traffic Police Department (PC08) will coordinate with specialized units to develop AI software to exploit data from the existing camera system, allowing automatic image analysis and recognition of violations, contributing to improving the efficiency of management and handling of traffic violations in Ho Chi Minh City.
According to the representative PC08 Department, expanding the application of artificial intelligence in traffic monitoring not only helps the traffic police detect, verify and send violation notices more quickly, but also contributes to reducing manual work, increasing management efficiency, making the violation handling process transparent, towards building smart cities and safe, civilized traffic.
