On May 18, the Vietnam Academy of Traditional Medicine organized a series of international scientific seminars with the theme "Inheritance - Creation - International Integration".
This is a large-scale academic event, gathering nearly 20 leading experts from Vietnam, China, Korea, Thailand, Japan, Malaysia and Taiwan (China)... to share knowledge, innovate training, update treatment and promote technology application in the field of traditional medicine.
It is necessary to combine training doctors with knowledge of both modern and traditional medicine.
Dr. Le Manh Cuong, Director of Tue Tinh Hospital, said that although there have been many directives, resolutions and legal documents on combining the two medical systems, the actual implementation still faces many difficulties. Currently, treatment regimens combining modern medicine and traditional medicine have not been approved and widely applied.
Therefore, Dr. Le Manh Cuong believes that to solve this problem, the first change is needed in training, aiming to train doctors with sufficient knowledge of both modern medicine and traditional medicine (for example, 50% knowledge for each field). This requires a change in the thinking of leaders, managers and scientists to integrate the two medical fields together.
At the Vietnam Academy of Traditional Medicine, there have been changes in training, trying to bring a new perspective to build in-depth scientific research on the combination of modern medicine and traditional medicine, from which to build specific treatment regimens. These studies will provide scientific evidence and basis to convince scientists, doctors and managers about the effectiveness of combining the two medical systems.

Overview of the workshop. |
According to this expert, this is a difficult problem because doctors are currently trained in two different medical systems. However, if we do not do it now, we will never know when we will be able to do it.
“Some countries like China have a training model that combines two medical systems, with a similar ratio (50% modern medicine, 50% traditional medicine). Vietnam can refer to and learn from the experiences of these countries so that doctors can have both knowledge at the same time. At Tue Tinh Hospital, we are also following this combination direction," said Dr. Cuong.
Dr. Le Manh Cuong shared that people need to realize that no treatment method is 100% perfect, but the important thing is that doctors must know how to prescribe and use the methods appropriately. Some diseases that are difficult to treat with modern medicine can be treated with traditional medicine. Traditional medicine can be especially effective in treating some chronic diseases such as musculoskeletal diseases, insomnia, back pain, etc.

According to the leader of Tue Tinh Hospital, in the transitional period, it is possible to apply a model combining modern medicine doctors and traditional medicine doctors to treat patients, in which modern doctors use modern methods but combine them with traditional medicine/methods and have consultation from traditional medicine doctors.
Early development of a set of criteria to standardize the capacity of traditional medicine doctors
Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Lien Huong said that Vietnam's traditional medicine sector is facing many opportunities and also many challenges in the context of increasingly deep international integration and comprehensive innovation of the health system.
The Deputy Minister hopes that experts will continue to promote the implementation of the Party's policies and legal regulations related to training, research, and application of traditional medicine treatment to develop Vietnamese traditional medicine and gradually integrate with the region and the world.

In addition, traditional medicine training institutions shall base on the regulations on basic competency standards for traditional medicine doctors, the scope of practice of medical examination and treatment of traditional medicine doctors that have been issued and refer to international experience through reports of countries with traditions of traditional medicine to innovate and improve the quality of training of Vietnamese traditional medicine doctors, aiming for an exam to assess the professional competency of traditional medicine doctors from 2027 according to the current Law on Medical Examination and Treatment.
Dr. Le Manh Cuong, Director of Tue Tinh Hospital, said that in order to assess the standard capacity of traditional medicine doctors from 2027, the first thing is to develop a set of criteria. Therefore, today's workshop is an opportunity for Vietnam to learn from the experience of international experts in developing this set of criteria.
The conference series includes 3 major thematic sessions with nearly 20 high-quality scientific reports, reflecting the development trends, integration and interdisciplinary application of traditional medicine in the world with contents that many people are interested in.
The first is the construction of a competency-based training system - an inevitable trend to standardize and improve the quality of human resources in the traditional medicine sector.
The highlight of session 2 focused on the possibility of effectively combining modern medicine and traditional medicine in cancer treatment - one of the biggest challenges of modern medicine.
The final session was also a multi-dimensional scientific forum on non-drug methods such as acupuncture, moxibustion, electroacupuncture - the heritage values of traditional medicine that are being researched, developed and applied strongly.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Huy, Director of the Vietnam Academy of Traditional Medicine, hopes that through this workshop, experts will discuss innovation in training methods to train traditional medicine doctors who meet professional capacity, employer needs, and adapt to the digital transformation environment, initially integrate internationally, and can practice in countries around the world.
"We will also unify the opinions proposed by the National Medical Council on specific requirements and key professional activities that traditional medicine doctors need to achieve in the professional competency assessment exam," Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Huy expressed.
