What is E10 gasoline and which cars can use it?

From August 1, some petroleum businesses in Vietnam will begin piloting the sale of E10 gasoline to the market. However, many car and motorbike users are still unclear about this type of gasoline and wonder whether their vehicles can use E10 gasoline?

Along with the trend of switching from gasoline motorbikes to electric motorbikes taking place in many provinces and cities; the conversion of fuel from mineral gasoline to biofuel is also being gradually implemented to reduce toxic emissions into the environment.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is currently consulting to submit to the Government a roadmap for using E10 gasoline to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, fulfilling the commitment to balance net emissions by 2050, expected to be implemented from January 1, 2026. Starting from August 1, the Vietnam National Petroleum Group (Petrolimex) and the Vietnam Oil Corporation (PV Oil) have begun piloting the sale of E10 gasoline in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Hai Phong.

Because the pilot implementation has just begun, many car and motorbike users are still vague about this type of gasoline and wonder if their vehicles can use E10 gasoline?

Mr. Le Ngoc Huy, residing in Cat Lai ward, Ho Chi Minh City, currently using both cars and motorbikes, said: "Recently, I have seen information on the media related to E10 gasoline. As a person who regularly uses daily transportation, I really want to contribute to the conversion to using biofuel to reduce the amount of toxic emissions into the environment. However, I myself am somewhat hesitant and wondering if this E10 gasoline is really suitable and usable for the vehicle models I am using."

What kind of gasoline is E10?

According to the biofuel handbook of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, biofuel is a mixture of traditional gasoline and bioethanol used for internal combustion gasoline engines such as cars and motorbikes.

In which, E10 gasoline is a type of bio-fuel containing 10% ethanol (bio-alcohol) and 90% regular mineral gasoline. The name E10 of this type of gasoline is understood with the letter E being the abbreviation for Ethanol. 10 is the percentage of ethanol mixed in gasoline.

Ethanol in E10 is produced from biological materials such as sugarcane, cassava, corn, etc., which helps increase the octane index and reduce harmful CO and HC emissions compared to regular mineral gasoline. Unlike regular unleaded gasoline, ethanol is considered to be somewhat carbon neutral, because during the growth process, plants absorb more CO₂ than is emitted when producing and burning fuel.

In many countries such as the US, Brazil, and Thailand, E10 gasoline has become a popular fuel, even upgraded to E15 or E20 to optimize environmental protection efficiency.

Can all cars use E10 gasoline?

In fact, E10 gasoline is encouraged to be used because it helps reduce harmful emissions into the environment thanks to the clean burning properties of ethanol. In addition, it will reduce dependence on fossil fuels because ethanol can be produced from renewable materials, such as sugarcane, corn, cassava, etc.

In particular, the price is also lower than that of traditional gasoline. According to the latest price list just announced by Petrolimex, the group's new retail price list of gasoline, applied from 3:00 p.m. on July 31, in which the price of E5 RON92 gasoline is 19,400 - 19,780 VND/liter; E10 RON95 gasoline is 19,600 - 19,990 VND/liter.

However, the ethanol in E10 gasoline is hygroscopic and highly corrosive, which can damage old materials such as rubber, plastic or metal in the fuel system. Therefore, not all types of vehicles are suitable for using E10 gasoline.

For motorbikes using carburetors or technology that does not support automatic fuel-air ratio adjustment, the air may operate less stably when using E10 gasoline. Some old motorbike models manufactured before 2010 are recommended not to use E10 gasoline. Meanwhile, new models of motorbikes, scooters, and manual clutch motorbikes manufactured and distributed by Honda, Yamaha, Piaggio, etc. in recent years are all suitable for use.

Some imported models such as Honda SH 125i/150i imported from Italy, or Honda Dash, Honda Vario 125/160, Yamaha 135LC imported from Malaysia and some imported motorbikes from Japan such as Honda Super Cub 50, Super Cub 110 all meet high emission standards (Euro 4, Euro 5 or Euro 5+)... can also use E10 gasoline without worrying about affecting the details in the fuel system. For example, the Honda SH 125i and 150i models imported from Italy by a store, the instruction book that comes with the vehicle as well as the inside of the fuel tank cap also have instructions on whether to use E5 or E10 gasoline...

The instruction manual that comes with the Honda SH 125i/150i imported from Italy as well as the inside of the gas tank cap have instructions on whether to use E5 or E10 gasoline.

For cars, most new cars from the last 10 years have instructions for using E10 gasoline without significantly affecting the quality and performance of the car. However, each car has different regulations, so the best way to know if your car can use E10 gasoline is to check the owner's manual.

In case the vehicle is using several manuals or there is no information about the appropriate biofuel that can be used… The best way is for the vehicle owner to proactively contact the service advisor of the authorized dealer to receive advice, as well as commitments on warranty and maintenance when using biofuel.
