According to Newsflare, a farmer named Somchai Boontong in Udon Thani province, Thailand, was participating in a fundraising fishing competition when he felt a strong pull on his fishing line.
He struggled to pull the giant creature - believed to be a Mekong giant catfish - to shore. Everyone was shocked by its enormous size, the fish was about 2 meters long and weighed up to 300kg.
The giant catfish weighs 300kg.
Fishmongers have been scrambling to buy the giant fish, as its meat costs around $2.9 to $3.4 per kilogram.
However, locals decided to sell it to a fundraising group, who bought the giant fish for $572 (VND14 million) and released it back into its natural habitat.
The local fisheries office helped transport the catfish to a pond at Wat Nong Ruea Klon. Staff monitored the fish for an hour to ensure it adapted to its new environment.
The fishing activity was initiated by the Uthai Thani Royal Irrigation Project to expand the Kaem Ling watershed and raise funds for local schools, hospitals and fisheries.
The Mekong giant catfish is listed as “critically endangered” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List. Overfishing, habitat loss and damming on the Mekong River are considered threats to the species’ population.
The giant catfish has a large, flat head, a wide mouth with two long barbels on the upper jaw, and long pelvic fins that reach the caudal fin. The back of the fish is dark brown, while the belly and fins are lighter. Despite its large size, the giant catfish feeds only on aquatic plants. The number of this fish in the wild is decreasing due to over-hunting.
