Hateco Hai Phong Port welcomes 200,000 DWT ship: City leaders request urgent infrastructure expansion

(Chinhphu.vn) - On the morning of August 2, comrade Le Ngoc Chau, Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Committee of Hai Phong City, inspected the operations at wharves 5 and 6 of Lach Huyen port area and worked with the leaders of Hateco Group Joint Stock Company.

Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of Hai Phong City People's Committee Le Ngoc Chau inspected the actual operation of HHIT Port.

Attending the meeting were comrades: Le Trung Kien, member of the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee, Head of the Economic Zone Management Board; Tran Van Quan, member of the City Party Committee, Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee; representatives of leaders of relevant departments, branches and units.

Hateco Hai Phong International Container Port grows strongly, proposes investment in a series of new industrial parks

At the meeting, Mr. Tran Van Ky, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hateco Group, said: the project of berths 5 and 6 of Lach Huyen port invested by the Group has a total area of 73 hectares.

The port is capable of receiving 2 large container ships up to 200,000 DWT (≥ 18,000 TEU) at the same time, with a maximum ship length of 400m. After more than 30 months of construction with more than 3 million safe working hours, the project was completed 2 months ahead of schedule.

On February 6, Hateco Hai Phong International Container Terminal (HHIT) welcomed its first commercial ship. On April 5, the project was officially inaugurated.

This is the first smart port in Vietnam, equipped with an automatic entrance/exit gate system, semi-automatic wharf, capable of receiving the world's largest container ships, operating direct routes to distant areas such as the West and East coasts of the United States, Europe, India...

Since officially coming into operation, the port's productivity has grown impressively, reaching 30 containers/hour.

Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of Hai Phong City People's Committee Le Ngoc Chau worked with leaders of Hateco Group Joint Stock Company.

Mr. Tran Van Ky proposed that the City People's Committee soon start the construction of the traffic route after the port, connecting from wharf No. 3 to wharf No. 6 and Tan Vu - Lach Huyen 2 bridge. At the same time, he suggested that the city soon report to the Ministry of Construction to urgently invest in expanding the Lach Huyen channel and adding a turning basin in front of wharfs No. 5 and 6 to ensure the safe entry/exit of 200,000 DWT ships. The Group also proposed that the city consider and introduce the location of the construction site for housing for experts, officials and workers working at the port and Cat Hai special economic zone.

In addition, Hateco Group wishes to research and implement a number of new projects such as: Tien Lang Airport Industrial Park (Area A), industrial parks in the Southern Hai Phong Economic Zone; Binh Giang Industrial Park 2, 4; Tu Ky Industrial Park 1; Hung Dao Industrial Park; inland waterway port projects in Ninh Giang (Luoc River); mixed urban, commercial and service areas; Tien Lang logistics center, etc.

Leaders of departments and branches such as the Economic Zone Management Board, the Management Board of Investment and Construction Projects for Transport and Agriculture, the Department of Finance, the Department of Construction, and the Hai Phong Maritime Port Authority discussed and clarified the recommendations of Hateco Group. In particular, the traffic route after the port from wharf No. 3 to wharf No. 6 is expected to start construction in August. The investor committed to shorten the construction time as much as possible to put the project into operation soon, creating convenience for vehicles entering and leaving the port.

Regarding the proposal to expand the waterway and add a turning basin, the city has proposed and the Ministry of Construction is submitting it to the Prime Minister. The project is included in the medium-term public investment plan for the period 2026-2030, expected to be submitted to the National Assembly for approval in the next session. In response to urgent requirements, after approval, the city will urge relevant units to promptly implement the construction.

HHIT Port is capable of receiving 2 large container ships up to 200,000 DWT (≥ 18,000 TEU) at the same time.

Regarding the need to build housing areas for experts and workers, the Economic Zone Management Board and related units in Cat Hai Special Zone have introduced a number of locations for businesses to choose from for investment. The authorities are committed to accompanying and supporting businesses in the process of researching and implementing projects in accordance with regulations.

Promoting the role of HHIT port, turning Hai Phong into an international logistics center

After directly inspecting the operations at HHIT port and listening to reports and proposals from departments and branches, Chairman of the City People's Committee Le Ngoc Chau highly appreciated the investment scale, implementation speed and operational capacity of Hateco Hai Phong International Container Port. Although it has just been put into operation, the port has welcomed the largest container ships ever, affirming the increasingly important position of the Hai Phong port system in the global supply chain, making a positive contribution to the city's socio-economic development.

The Chairman of the City People's Committee requested Hateco Group and HHIT Port to continue to closely coordinate with the City People's Committee, departments and branches to unify the content of the report, recommending central ministries and branches to promptly implement transport and maritime infrastructure projects, ensuring effective operation and exploitation. For proposed investment projects, the Group urgently works with the Department of Construction and the Economic Zone Management Board to unify the implementation roadmap. As for the plan to build a housing area for workers, from the introduced locations, the Group quickly selected and reported to the City People's Committee for consideration and approval.

The Chairman of the City People's Committee also requested Hateco Group to select typical products and impressive models to participate in the exhibition area "Hai Phong - Faith and aspiration to rise with the country", on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of National Day (September 2, 1945 - September 2, 2025).
