Warning about gym accidents: Danger for people with underlying medical conditions and following trends

Gym is gradually becoming a trend among many ages thanks to its positive health benefits. However, not everyone is suitable for exercise, especially high-intensity exercises.

Potential risks for people with underlying medical conditions

Specialist Doctor Phan Tat Khanh Duong, Department of Internal Medicine at Nam Sai Gon International General Hospital, said that there are some people who need to consider carefully or consult a doctor before starting to work out at the gym. In particular, people with underlying medical conditions such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, arrhythmia, or unstable blood pressure are susceptible to dangerous complications if they exercise at high intensity or are not closely monitored.

“During vigorous exercise, the heart rate increases and blood pressure changes. For people with cardiovascular problems, this can cause risks such as stroke, cardiac arrest or severe arrhythmia, even during exercise or immediately afterward,” Dr. Duong warned.

Not only people with heart disease...

Not only people with cardiovascular disease, but also people who have smoked for a long time, thin people, tall and weak people, or people with chronic lung disease (asthma, COPD) are also susceptible to negative effects when exercising too hard or incorrectly. The respiratory system is not able to respond to strenuous exercise, causing the practitioner to quickly become exhausted, have difficulty breathing, even faint or suffer from acute respiratory failure.

According to Dr. Duong, the first important thing is that the practitioner, especially middle-aged people, people with underlying diseases or weak health, should have a general health check-up before starting any exercise program. This helps to detect early potential problems related to the heart, respiratory system, and blood pressure that can arise during strenuous exercise.

In addition, doctors recommend not to arbitrarily practice according to online videos or imitate others to practice heavy, high-intensity exercises right from the start. Instead, you should start with light exercises, with professional guidance, closely monitor your body's reactions and gradually increase the intensity according to your ability.

“Working out at the gym is to stay healthy. But if you don’t work out in accordance with your physical condition, it’s like putting your body in danger,” Dr. Duong emphasized.

Common mistakes when working out at the gym

According to coach Marcus, who has 5 years of experience as a PT (Personal Trainer), many people, especially young people, often follow trends and fads on social networks but skip the basic adaptation phase, leading to injury, hypotension or exhaustion.

“Many members come to the gym and demand advanced training from the beginning. Some even follow TikTok videos without understanding the techniques. As a result, they have muscle pain and dizziness while exercising,” Marcus shared.

Another common mistake is skipping the warm-up and cool-down steps after exercise. These steps help your body get used to the movement and avoid cardiovascular shock or joint damage.

“Working out is a long journey, not a sprint. Skipping the warm-up or recovery step after exercise is a mistake that many people, especially beginners, often make. The body needs time to adapt to the intensity of exercise and warming up helps warm up muscle groups, lubricate joints, increase blood flow to the heart and lungs, thereby reducing the risk of injury," said trainer Marcus.

Likewise, the post-workout recovery period is equally important to help the body cool down slowly, relieve muscle tension, and limit prolonged soreness. Rushing to train hard from the start or training continuously without rest can lead to injury and force you to take weeks or even months off to heal.
