According to Quang Ninh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, children are particularly susceptible to illness due to their immature immune systems. During the summer months, parents should pay special attention to common diseases such as Japanese encephalitis, hand, foot and mouth disease, dengue fever, influenza, diarrhea, respiratory infections, and skin diseases.

Among these, Japanese encephalitis is a dangerous disease caused by a virus, transmitted through Culex mosquitoes. The disease can be fatal or leave severe neurological sequelae if not detected early.

Prolonged hot weather also increases the risk of heatstroke and sunstroke in children. When exposed to the sun for extended periods, children may experience symptoms such as lethargy, headache, nausea, dizziness, high fever, and hot, red skin. In severe cases, it can lead to altered consciousness, coma, and be life-threatening.

Furthermore, hot and humid weather creates favorable conditions for bacteria to thrive in food, increasing the risk of diarrhea and digestive disorders. Children with prolonged diarrhea are prone to dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and malnutrition if not treated promptly.

Respiratory illnesses are also more likely to flare up when children constantly move in and out of air-conditioned rooms, drink excessively cold water, or experience sudden temperature changes. In addition, excessive sweating in hot weather makes children more susceptible to heat rash, dermatitis, fungal infections, itching, and boils.

To prevent illness in children during the summer, doctors advise parents to limit outdoor activities during peak sunlight hours from 10 am to 4 pm, dress children in breathable clothing, ensure they drink enough water, and provide a balanced diet.

Families need to ensure that food is cooked thoroughly, water is boiled, and living environments are kept clean. They should also instruct children to wash their hands frequently with soap and limit visits to crowded places during outbreaks of infectious diseases.

In particular, parents need to ensure their children receive all vaccinations on schedule to prevent dangerous infectious diseases.

When children exhibit unusual symptoms such as high fever, difficulty breathing, prolonged diarrhea, rash, seizures, lethargy, or excessive fatigue, they should be quickly taken to a medical facility for examination and timely treatment.
