Beware of nasopharyngeal cancer

Báo Cà MauBáo Cà Mau14/06/2023

In addition, the patient also has headaches that occur continuously, become more severe, feel constant tinnitus, the patient's hearing gradually decreases, the patient has continuous nasal congestion with pus and nosebleeds. The patient will have swollen lymph nodes at the angle of the jaw, the patient can recognize the lymph nodes with the naked eye. At first, the lymph nodes are small and hard, then the lymph nodes gradually enlarge and spread to other locations.

When experiencing the above signs, the patient may be in the final stages of nasopharyngeal cancer.

Doctors at Cai Nuoc General Hospital clinically examine abnormal signs in the nasopharynx of a patient.

Currently, medicine has discovered many different types of nasopharyngeal cancer. Therefore, understanding each type of cancer can help us understand the level of danger, the direction of treatment as well as the steps to take to help improve the patient's health.

Nasopharyngeal cancer is quite common today such as nasopharyngeal carcinoma and other types of nasopharyngeal cancer. Although there may be many tumors in the nasopharynx, not all tumors are cancerous, some are benign tumors, others are malignant tumors (cancer).

Most people with nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) visit their doctor to find a lump or mass in the neck, or on either side of the back of the neck, that is usually painless or tender. This is because the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes in the neck, causing them to swell. Lymph nodes are glands or organs that contain immune system cells and are found throughout the body. Typically, lymph nodes are smaller than the size of a pea.

It can be said that, with extremely dangerous developments, nasopharyngeal cancer is the leading disease in head and neck cancers today. Because the nasopharynx, also known as the nasopharynx, is an anatomical structure located behind the nose. In this position, people cannot observe with the naked eye but must use an endoscope. This is a malignant disease originating from the epithelial cells of the nasopharynx - the highest part of the throat, located right behind the nose.

A recent statistic from the Ministry of Health shows that in Vietnam, for both men and women, the rate of nasopharyngeal cancer ranks 6th out of 10 common cancers. In terms of mortality rate, this disease ranks 7th. People in the age group of 30-50 are considered to have the highest risk of getting the disease. Notably, men are 3 times more likely to get nasopharyngeal cancer than women.

According to Dr. Ho Thanh Dam: “The earlier the disease is detected, the higher the chance of cure. In stage I, if detected and treated successfully, the 5-year survival rate often reaches 82%.”

The symptoms of nasopharyngeal cancer in the early stages are often asymptomatic. In later stages, the disease may cause a tumor in the neck due to enlarged metastatic lymph nodes. According to statistics on nasopharyngeal cancer patients, 85-90% of patients when the disease is detected are already in the stage of metastasis to one side of the neck. Typical symptoms include: Nosebleeds; coughing up blood; nasal congestion; tinnitus, hearing loss; persistent ear infections; headaches; sudden squinting on one side, seeing one as two...

Therefore, oncologists recommend that when seeing the above unusual signs, it is best for patients to go for a check-up and receive advice from a doctor to determine the cause and have timely treatment if this is a symptom of nasopharyngeal cancer./.
