Tokyo police said a 25-year-old riot officer apparently committed suicide early on May 5 in a toilet at a guard station on the grounds of the prime minister's office in Tokyo.
The victim, Yuta Kurokawa, was found by a colleague with a bloody head at the scene at 4:40 a.m. (local time) after a gunshot was heard. Kurokawa was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead 30 minutes later.
Investigators said they found a weapon near the body and that a bullet had been fired from the gun. No suicide note was found.
Kurokawa, a member of the riot police squad, was working the night shift when the incident occurred.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was on a week-long tour of Africa and Singapore and was not in the office at the time.
