According to Deputy Minister of Transport Le Dinh Tho, the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress identified the construction of a synchronous infrastructure system with a number of modern projects focusing on transportation systems and major urban infrastructure, with the goal of completing the North-South expressway by 2025.

According to the road network plan for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, the North-South expressway is divided into two phases.

Specifically, the North-South Expressway project, phase 1 (2017-2020), spans over 650km and comprises 11 component projects. Six sections have already been opened to traffic: Cao Bo - Mai Son, Mai Son - National Highway 45, Cam Lo - La Son, Phan Thiet - Dau Giay, Vinh Hao - Phan Thiet, and Nha Trang - Cam Lam.

While phase 1 of the project was nearing completion, in early 2023, 12 component projects of the North-South Expressway phase 2 (2021-2025) were simultaneously launched. These component projects operate independently and are expected to be largely completed by 2025.

Phase 2 of the North-South Expressway project has a total length of 729km, passing through the territory of 12 provinces and cities, including the following sections: Ha Tinh - Quang Tri; Quang Ngai - Nha Trang; Can Tho - Ca Mau .

From the very first days of issuing the order to commence these 12 component projects, the Ministry of Transport stated that contractors had mobilized personnel, machinery, and equipment to simultaneously implement the projects across all packages.

The Ministry of Transport has reported that local authorities are urgently working to hand over 100% of the land area for the project as soon as possible. Simultaneously, construction teams are actively carrying out the work.

Currently, the investor has directed contractors to mobilize more than 500 construction teams across the entire North-South expressway project to take advantage of favorable weather conditions, organize simultaneous construction, and adhere closely to the set plan.

This includes 219 bridge and tunnel construction sites and 315 road construction sites. A total of nearly 11,000 people were mobilized (over 10,500 workers and engineers, and 310 supervisory consultants) and nearly 5,000 pieces of machinery and equipment.

"To date, the North-South expressway has completed 29 sections/route sections with a total length of 1,729km. The construction progress of the expressways is closely following the set plan," a representative from the Ministry of Transport said.

Since the beginning of the term (2020), nearly 600km of the project has been put into operation nationwide. Notably, many sections of the route have been opened to traffic since the beginning of this year.

Specifically, on April 30th, three sections of the route were opened to traffic: Mai Son – National Highway 45 ( Thanh Hoa ), Dau Giay - Phan Thiet, and Phan Thiet - Vinh Hao (Binh Thuan). On June 18th, two more component projects, Nha Trang - Cam Lam and Vinh Hao - Phan Thiet, were inaugurated.

The Ministry of Transport announced that, in time for the September 2nd holiday this year, two more sections of the National Highway 45 expressway – the 43km Nghi Son section and the 50km Nghi Son - Dien Chau section – will be put into operation. In addition, the Cam Lam - Vinh Hao and My Thuan 2 bridge projects will be completed between now and the end of the year.

With the commissioning of the four aforementioned component projects in 2023, the Ministry of Transport estimates that a total of 1,852km of the North-South expressway will be completed by the end of this year.
