The current difficult and awkward situation facing the EU and NATO in responding to the policies of US President Donald Trump, in supporting Ukraine, and in confronting Russia has created an opportunity for French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to join forces and form a new power couple in Europe.

In recent days, these two leaders have been very active and proactive in rallying forces in Europe, while assuming the role of leading Europe in responding to the challenges it faces. They are overshadowing both the role and influence of the EU and NATO.
President Macron and Prime Minister Starker repeatedly proposed and chaired high-level meetings of various EU and NATO member groups to discuss how to respond to the new administration in Washington, support Kyiv, and counter Russia. The two leaders also put forward specific proposals to rally the "powerful forces" in Europe. Both aimed at exploiting the disillusionment and distrust of EU and NATO members regarding US commitments. Both focused on maximizing Europe's needs, simultaneously trying to retain the US while striving for self-reliance as much as possible to reduce dependence on the US, in order to continue providing strong military support to Ukraine to deter Russia. Both seized the opportunity presented by Europe's current lack of leadership capable of navigating the crisis and challenges. Both appeared confident in their ability to maintain good relations with the new US administration while also possessing sufficient credibility to lead Europe.
The Paris-London axis has thus become prominent, and the Macron/Starmer partnership has been formed to counterbalance the Donald Trump/Putin partnership. The French and British leaders are now seizing the opportune moment and geographical advantages to cultivate harmony for their ambitious roles in Europe.
