Accordingly, while eating birthday cake at home, the boy, D.QB, suddenly felt something stuck in his throat, causing pain and vomiting. His family suspected he had choked and immediately took him to a medical facility for examination.
At Dong Nai Children's Hospital, baby D.QB showed symptoms of neck pain, excessive drooling, fatigue, and inability to eat or drink. Doctors quickly anesthetized the child and performed an emergency endoscopy, discovering a piece of plastic lodged in the patient's esophagus, which was then removed.
Dr. Ngo Van Phan, Head of the Interdisciplinary Department at Dong Nai Children's Hospital, said: "If the foreign object remains in the child's esophagus for longer, it can cause esophagitis, abscesses, and even mediastinitis, which is life-threatening. This foreign object is a small, thin, transparent piece of plastic, making it very difficult to detect. In particular, this foreign object is not very radiopaque, making it very difficult to detect on X-ray films."
Dr. Phan advises that when cutting cakes or feeding children, parents should be careful to remove any foreign objects from the food. Children should not be allowed to eat while watching phones, laughing, talking, or running around to avoid choking. If any signs of choking are detected, the child should be quickly taken to a medical facility for immediate emergency treatment.
