Multiple test formats
On September 20 and 21, Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry organized an English proficiency test for students of the 2024 class. According to the school's announcement, all new students will be tested for English proficiency to arrange classes suitable for the main curriculum, except for students of advanced programs and English Language majors.
For Food Technology and Animal Husbandry - Veterinary Medicine, students will take the test according to the faculty's own schedule. Students will take a paper-based test, consisting of 200 multiple-choice questions in 120 minutes.
The University of Economics and Law (Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City) also organized an English entrance exam for all students who did not meet the required foreign language standards on September 4 and 5. Students can retake the exam if they do not achieve the desired results on the first attempt. Before that, the school announced a sample test so that new students can take the test for free at home. The exam of the University of Economics and Law includes 3 skills: Listening, reading, writing.
According to the school's regulations, students who do not have the required English proficiency to participate in the main program must participate in the basic English course at the school. The basic English course is designed to support learners to quickly achieve the foreign language proficiency to participate in the main program.
For Ho Chi Minh City Open University, the English proficiency assessment is applied to all new students of the general and high-quality programs. Students of English, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese majors are exempted from the exam. This is to place students in classes appropriate to their level and improve the quality of training. The exam will be held from September 16 to 20, with exam sessions following the order in which students complete online admission procedures.
Ho Chi Minh City Open University uses an English placement test called Placement Test, designed and compiled by Oxford University Press. The test consists of two parts, completed in 90 minutes. The English test includes requirements to complete a conversation with appropriate grammar and vocabulary patterns, read and understand a short conversation, and fill in the blanks with grammar and vocabulary patterns.
The listening section consists of short conversations, longer conversations and monologues, and the speaker's meaning is then determined. New students take the test in a computer lab connected to the Oxford University Press online system.
At Van Lang University (HCMC), the English test at the beginning of the course is also a mandatory activity in the training program for new students. Based on the results of the test, the school arranges general English classes suitable for the students' level, arranges appropriate teaching methods, and improves foreign language skills to meet output standards.
From August 20 to September 10, the school's Testing Center will organize the first English test for students of the 30th course (enrollment in 2024). The second test from September 11 to September 30 is for additional cases.
Previously, Tan Tao University ( Long An ) organized an English entrance exam for new students of the 2024 class. The exam has 4 skills: Listening, speaking, reading, writing. The test helps to comprehensively assess the vocabulary, grammar and communication reflexes of new students.
Based on this assessment, learners will receive detailed feedback on their current language proficiency, helping to identify strengths and weaknesses in order to develop a suitable learning path and improve if necessary.
At some universities, English proficiency tests are applied to some English-taught programs. For example, Hong Bang International University (HCMC) organizes tests for students who wish to enroll in English-taught programs in the following majors: Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Digital Marketing.
Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport organizes an entrance English proficiency assessment for new students studying a 100% English program or an international joint program. The test includes 3 or 4 skills, in the form of a shortened IELTS.

Free tuition if foreign language ability is good
At universities, when taking the English entrance exam, students can use this result to exempt or transfer credits for English courses in the training program if needed. Also according to the regulations of the schools, new students can submit a foreign language certificate that meets the entrance standards according to the regulations to be exempted from the English proficiency test and some English courses in the program.
Ms. Truong Thi Ngoc Bich - Deputy Director of the Admissions Consulting and Communication Center of Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Finance said that most of the school's training programs are bilingual, with English accounting for 50% of teaching and learning time. Right from the admission procedures, each candidate is tested for English proficiency. Through the test results, students are placed in classes with appropriate levels.
In addition to the English proficiency test, the school organizes exams and considers exemptions from English courses for new students. Accordingly, depending on the foreign language ability demonstrated through international English certificates, students are exempted from the corresponding English courses. For example, new students with IELTS 5.0, TOEIC (listening, reading) 550 - 600 or TOEFL iBT 59 - 64 certificates are exempted from 3 English courses in the program.
With IELTS 5.5 or higher, TOEIC (listening, reading) 605 or higher and TOEFL iBT 65 or higher, students are exempted from 4 courses. For the exam organized by the school, based on the results, students are also considered for exemption and recognition of passing the course (maximum 2 courses), depending on the score.
MSc. Pham Thai Son - Director of the Admissions and Communications Center, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, said that the main purpose of the English entrance test is to place students in appropriate classes. According to the school's regulations, students with a score below 4 will register for the elementary English course; students with a score of 4 or higher will register for the English 1 course.
“Students with a foreign language certificate according to the 6-level foreign language proficiency framework for Vietnam or equivalent international foreign language certificates that are valid for 2 years can be considered for exemption from studying, exempt from exams and have their foreign language course scores converted accordingly,” noted MSc. Son.
Regarding graduation output standards, many universities are using the 6-level English proficiency framework for Vietnam (VSTEP). The output standard requirement at many schools is level 3/6 VSTEP or equivalent certificates.
