After a tonsillectomy, patients should be aware of issues such as bleeding, infection, and pain management. Because the tonsils are located deep within the throat, the care of the surgical site differs from that of other skin wounds.

The time required for a tonsil incision to heal completely is approximately 2-3 weeks, depending on the individual patient's condition, diet, and care.

A varied and balanced diet promotes faster wound healing, reduces the risk of bleeding, and fights infection. However, because the surgical incision is directly above the digestive and oral passages, choosing the right food is crucial.

Doctors usually advise patients who have had their tonsils removed to eat soft, liquid, and cool foods such as porridge, milk, yogurt, minced meat, vegetables, and soft fruits. They should limit spicy and pungent seasonings, hot and hard foods as these can easily injure the tonsil surgery site. This should be combined with adhering to medication regimens, avoiding loud or excessive talking, and strenuous exercise.

Alcoholic beverages in general, including wine and beer, should be avoided during the post-operative period. Alcohol alters the permeability of the mucous membrane, destroys the surface lipid layer that protects the mucous membrane, and negatively impacts the healing process after tonsillectomy.

You should abstain from all types of beverages for at least the entire post-operative period (approximately 2-3 weeks), or for as long as possible. It's best to avoid alcohol during this time. For safety, you should have a follow-up appointment so your doctor can assess the current state of your incision and provide the most appropriate advice.
