According to APNews, the incident occurred at Jackson Rodriguez’s home in Guayaquil city. At around 3am on April 23 (local time), strangers suddenly broke in and attacked Jackson Rodriguez’s family.
According to local police reports, Jackson Rodriguez hid under the bed when he heard the door being broken down. Strangers kidnapped his wife and 5-year-old son when they couldn't find the Emelec defender.
According to Rodriguez's testimony, he only had time to see through the window the kidnappers in a gray pickup truck. This player was calling on the strangers to return his wife and children safely.
Jackson Rodriguez was born in 1998 and plays as a left back. He currently plays for Ecuador's Emelec Club.
The kidnapping at the player's home occurred just 10 days after the Ecuadorian government declared a state of emergency in nine regions across the country, including the province of Guayas, where the city of Guayaquil, where Jackson Rodriguez and his wife live, is located.
The government's declaration of a state of emergency allows armed forces to intervene and deal with organized crime gangs that have been causing countless violent incidents in recent times.
Ecuador has been plagued by lax security and rampant crime for the past four years. According to government reports, 2,345 people died in violence between January and March of this year. 742 of those deaths occurred in the port city of Guayaquil, where gangs congregate to transport drugs to the United States and Europe.
