Mr. Hoang Dinh Chinh (Van Giang district, Hung Yen ) has over 300 large and small ornamental grapefruit trees, many of which are ancient trees, with an estimated total value of nearly 30 billion VND. There is a 100-year-old grapefruit tree that Mr. Chinh has put in a pot and named it "Homeland's Roots", with a customer offering 500 million VND...

This year, Mr. Chinh's garden has over 300 ancient grapefruit trees ready to serve customers. Mr. Chinh estimates that the garden is worth tens of billions of dong.

About 1.5 months before the Lunar New Year of At Ty 2025, many customers called to ask for information or came to the garden to choose ancient grapefruit.

According to Mr. Chinh, this year, ancient grapefruit trees with unique shapes such as "straight", "three-devil", "five-blessing", "mysterious", "tea table" and named by him as: "Chinh truc", "Sum vay", "Nga vang" are still sought after by many people.

The price of ornamental grapefruit trees for Tet this year in his garden ranges from a few million VND for small trees; beautiful, unique grapefruit trees can cost up to hundreds of millions of VND.

More than a week ago, the ancient "super pomelo bonsai" named "Family Roof" which Mr. Chinh valued at the highest price of up to 800 million VND was rented by someone to enjoy during the Lunar New Year At Ty.

After the most valuable ancient grapefruit tree in the garden was rented by a customer, Mr. Chinh revealed to PV Dan Viet that in his garden there is another "super product" of ancient grapefruit named "Coi Nguon Que Huong", which is currently valued at over 650 million VND.

Sharing with Dan Viet about the ancient grapefruit tree named "Homeland's Roots", he said: "This grapefruit tree is a Dien grapefruit tree about 100 years old, grafted with a red grapefruit variety.

This ancient tree is 4m high, with a canopy of nearly 4m wide. Notably, the tree bears more than 200 naturally ripe yellow and red grapefruits. The tree was planted in the garden for 3 years, then transferred to a pot and cared for for another 2 years before bearing fruit. The tree has a village-like shape, with a wide canopy, evoking the image of an ancient banyan tree protecting the village.

According to the garden owner, to have a potted tree with a long life for Tet, it takes at least 3-5 years of care. The first year, the tree will be nurtured to be healthy, the second year, the pot will be taken care of and the grapefruit will be grafted, and the third year, it will produce fruit.

"To be able to grow grapefruit, you have to really love the tree. Sometimes, just a small mistake can cost tens of millions of dong. This year, the weather is quite erratic, so growing grapefruit requires a certain amount of experience to be successful," Mr. Chinh shared.

Mr. Chinh added: "To have an ancient grapefruit work, it takes a lot of effort, time to care for, and money, so I don't want to sell these grapefruit trees but only want to rent them out. After Tet, these grapefruit trees will return to the garden to be cared for, serving hobbyists and enthusiasts for the following years."

Mr. Chinh said that if he sold all 300 of these grapefruit trees, he would earn an estimated capital and profit of nearly ten billion VND. Photo: Minh Ngoc

Talking about the ornamental plant market this year, Mr. Chinh said that due to the impact of storm No. 3, many gardeners suffered great damage, so the price of ornamental grapefruit increased compared to previous years.

Regarding the price of kumquat this year, Mr. Nguyen Van Hoang, owner of a kumquat garden in Lien Nghia commune (Van Giang district) said that kumquat trees in Van Giang last long during Tet. Before customers buy them, the garden owners take care of them and water them. Those who buy them home only need to water them and they will last until after Tet.

Van Giang kumquats are quite diverse in species, from small tabletop trees, bonsai kumquats, animal-shaped trees... to tall trees, large trees, vases... Currently, the selling price ranges from 450,000 - 4,000,000 VND/tree depending on the size of the vase and the beauty of the tree. Specifically, kumquats grown in 50cm high vases are sold in the field for about 450,000 - 500,000 VND/tree; grown in 30-liter ceramic vases cost 1 - 1.2 million VND/tree; grown in 0.6 - 0.7m2 jars cost 1.8 - 2.2 million VND/tree; grown in 80-liter ceramic pots cost from 2.5 - 3 million VND/tree...

According to garden owners in Van Giang, the selling price at the garden is usually 30-50% cheaper than on the street. Mr. Dam Van Trung, owner of a kumquat garden in Van Giang, said that selling on the market is more expensive because the garden owner has to hire people to cut the kumquat, costing about 700,000 - 1 million VND/day. In addition, there are transportation costs, renting space... so the price is pushed up quite a bit. Therefore, the price of a kumquat tree is almost doubled.

Currently, in Hung Yen province, there are 7 flower and ornamental plant craft villages in Xuan Quan, Phung Cong, Lien Nghia, Thang Loi and Me So communes (Van Giang district); Dong Tao and Binh Minh communes (Khoai Chau district), with a total flower and ornamental plant production area of about 1,200 hectares.

The flower and ornamental plant craft villages are all conveniently located to connect with a number of eco -tourism areas, points and routes. These are great potentials for development and creating links with a number of highly specialized training facilities in flowers, ornamental plants and tourism in the region.

In March 2022, the People's Committee of Hung Yen province also issued Decision No. 589, approving the Project "Developing flower and ornamental plant craft villages associated with agricultural tourism in Hung Yen province until 2025, with a vision to 2030."

Hung Yen province strives to have total revenue of these craft villages reach over VND5,000 billion by 2030; at the same time, diversify tourism activities associated with improving service quality in flower and ornamental plant craft villages and strive to welcome about 600,000-800,000 tourists.
