“This extraordinary violin represents the pinnacle of craftsmanship and classical music history,” said Mari-Claudia Jimenez, Chairman of Sotheby’s. “Its unparalleled sound and prestigious provenance have captivated collectors and musicians alike.”
The violin, called the “Joachim-Ma Stradivarius,” became the third most expensive instrument ever sold at auction, though the buyer was not disclosed. The previous record price for a Stradivarius, the “Lady Blunt,” sold for $15.9 million in 2011.
“What sets the Joachim-Ma Stradivarius apart is its distinctive sound – rich, complex and profound,” said Sotheby's auction house.
The instrument was once owned by renowned Chinese violinist Si-Hon Ma, who, before his death in 2009, donated it to the New England Conservatory of Music (NEC) in Boston on the condition that it be sold in the future to raise funds for scholarships.
Previously, the instrument belonged to the 19th-century Hungarian pianist Joseph Joachim, who was famous for his collaborations with legendary composers such as Johannes Brahms.
