After meeting with Indonesian President Joko Widodo on the morning of April 17 in Jakarta (the capital of Indonesia), Apple CEO Tim Cook said he discussed with the head of the "archipelago country" about the president's desire to promote Apple's production here.
Apple's leadership said there is no limit to the investment possibilities in Indonesia, expressing confidence in investing there. "There are many great things to invest in and we are working on them," he said. Apple is currently actively looking to diversify its supply chain and assemble outside of China. The company has many manufacturing activities taking place in India and Vietnam, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic.

China is now the assembly plant of many technology companies, not just Apple. Currently, most iPhones and iPads are completed in the world's most populous country.
According to Associate Professor Chris Miller of Tufts University (USA), China's economy is slowing down while the government is stepping up support for domestic businesses, which are factors that make Apple need an alternative. He commented: "Apple has invested more heavily in India and Vietnam but is also considering other partner markets in Southeast Asia for production and assembly activities."
Although it does not have a factory in Indonesia, the company has been running developer training programs there since 2018 through the Apple Developer Academy. Cook’s visit this time is also to attend the inauguration of the fourth academy located in Indonesia.
Indonesia has also made public its efforts to attract foreign manufacturing investment to boost economic growth. These efforts have attracted the attention of leading technology companies in the US. In early April, the leadership team of graphics chip maker Nvidia announced plans to build an artificial intelligence research center in the city of Surakarta (Central Java). Later this month, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is also expected to visit the "country of thousands of islands", according to Indonesia's Minister of Information and Communications.
