The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) on December 6 accused Comerica Bank of mistreatment and disregard for vulnerable customers receiving federal assistance.

According to Reuters, citing a CFPB statement, Comerica's providers deliberately disconnected more than 24 million calls from customers before they could connect with bank representatives. CFPB Director Rohit Chopra stated: "By deliberately disconnecting millions of calls and charging illegal spam call fees, Comerica increased its net profit by taking away benefits from Americans who live on fixed incomes."
Comerica is also accused of imposing illegal terms of service on consumers who want to stop payments and of failing to investigate issues related to illicit accounts.
For its part, Comerica Bank stated: "Despite our efforts to provide crucial context, the CFPB has consistently ignored our arguments and documentation."
