Caring for coffee trees during the fruiting period

Mai Son district has 9,169 hectares of coffee, mainly Arabica. At this time, the green coffee hills in Mai Son district are in the fruiting stage. Farmers are actively taking care of their coffee trees, hoping for a bumper crop, bringing in high income.

Mr. Nguyen Khac Hao, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Mai Son district, said: The Department is coordinating with communes to strengthen propaganda, instruct people on care techniques, fertilize with the right dosage, suitable for each stage of tree development, helping the fruit grow well, limiting the loss of young fruit. Regularly check, detect early, and promptly prevent harmful pests such as mealybugs, branch borers, dry branch disease... At the same time, prune small branches, diseased branches, so that the tree can concentrate nutrients to nourish the fruit, create ventilation for the tree, limit the occurrence and spread of pests and diseases.

With 1,250 hectares of coffee, Chieng Ban is the commune with the largest coffee growing area in Mai Son district. Mr. Doan Quang Dung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Chieng Ban commune, said: To help farmers have a bumper coffee harvest, the commune has coordinated with specialized units and departments of the district to train and help farmers apply techniques in production and care according to VietGAP and organic standards, to improve the productivity and quality of the trees.

With over 20 years of experience growing coffee, Ms. Hoang Thi Xau, Cu village, Chieng Ban commune, shared: Right after the coffee harvest, my family focused on pruning small branches that are not likely to flower, fertilizing, and supplementing nutrients for the trees. Currently, nearly 2 hectares of coffee are cared for organically, with an automatic irrigation system installed to ensure adequate moisture for the trees. The coffee is bearing fruit and growing very well. If the weather is favorable, this year's coffee crop is estimated to reach about 50 tons.

In Chieng Mung commune, there are over 750 hectares of coffee. The commune has directed the villages to focus on propaganda and instruct households to actively take care of coffee trees effectively, improve productivity and quality. Mr. Pham Duy Hung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Chieng Mung commune, said: The commune encourages farmers to focus on applying fertilizers with high potassium and phosphorus content, applying fertilizers at the right time and in the right dosage. At the same time, check and detect early common pests and diseases during the fruiting stage; instruct people on effective prevention measures.

Mai Son currently has 1,143 hectares of high-tech coffee, concentrated in 18 villages of the communes: Chieng Ban, Chieng Chung, Chieng Dong. High-tech coffee production areas include 876 households associated with the production of 671.4 hectares of coffee with Phuc Sinh Son La Joint Stock Company; 679 households and individuals associated with the production of more than 368 hectares of coffee with Son La Coffee Processing Joint Stock Company. Growers always ensure the fertilization process, striving for a total output of nearly 90,000 tons of fresh fruit.

Entering the rainy season, this is the period when coffee berries begin to rapidly increase in size. The Department of Agriculture and Environment of Mai Son district recommends that coffee growers pay attention to providing adequate and reasonable nutrients according to the following principles: Right type of fertilizer, right dosage, right method and right time.

In addition, pay attention to weeding, allowing coffee trees to photosynthesize, receive light, and avoid pests that harm the trees, so that coffee trees continue to be the main crop that brings high income to many households, contributing to the socio -economic development of the locality.
