Plant care during rainy season and high tides

Việt NamViệt Nam12/11/2024

(VLO) According to the agricultural sector, during the rainy season and high tides, many areas of rice, vegetables and fruit gardens are easily flooded if it rains continuously for many days. Therefore, technical measures to care for crops during this period are extremely necessary.

When the garden is flooded, the water needs to be drained out of the garden quickly.
When the garden is flooded, the water needs to be drained out of the garden quickly.

For many months now, the natural disaster and flood situation in the Mekong Delta region, including Vinh Long province, has been quite complicated, with continuous stormy weather and rising tides, causing much damage to production and affecting people's lives.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, since the beginning of the year, storms, whirlwinds, and heavy rains have knocked down nearly 1,800 hectares of summer-autumn and autumn-winter rice and many trees, killing 28.05 hectares of newly sown rice. In addition, high tides have also flooded 45.64 hectares of fruit trees and 68.7 hectares of vegetables.

Therefore, to minimize damage caused by flooding on crops, farmers have proactively implemented technical measures to protect production.

Many fruit gardeners say that during the rainy season, storms, and high tides, if the garden does not drain water in time and is heavily flooded, the tree roots are easily damaged and susceptible to fungal diseases such as root rot, root fungus, etc., causing the tree to grow slowly, lose leaves, flowers, and young fruit. If the tree is seriously ill, the main root system dies, leading to the tree dying as well.

The embankment collapsed, causing the tidal water to suddenly flood into the rambutan garden. Mr. Nguyen Van Luom (An Binh commune, Long Ho district) said: "Before the rainy season and high tide, I also proactively checked and reviewed the embankment, but the high water and prolonged rain caused the landslide, causing water to flood into the garden, leaving me unable to react in time.

Immediately after that, I and the surrounding people quickly reinforced the dike and took measures to restore the trees after being flooded, such as quickly pumping water out of the garden, digging trenches to let the water drain as quickly as possible, and not fertilizing the trees until they had recovered.

According to the agricultural sector, during the rainy and flood season, depending on the severity of the flooding, plants may die, be at risk of dying, or will cause poor growth, reducing productivity and quality in the following seasons.

To overcome the effects of flooding and rain and gradually restore crop growth and development, the agricultural sector recommends that farmers implement many synchronous solutions.

Specifically, during the rainy season, it is necessary to limit the use of uncomposted organic fertilizers because this will cause microorganisms to become active, consuming a lot of oxygen for plants when flooded. If the garden is unfortunately flooded, the first thing to do is to quickly drain the water out of the garden by many measures to clear the flow, including using a pump.

At the same time, prune ineffective branches and shoots to limit nutrient loss and avoid shaking the roots when the garden is flooded.

In case the garden is flowering or bearing fruit, it is necessary to cut or remove some of the flowers and fruits on the tree (in case the garden is heavily flooded for a long time, all flowers and fruits should be cut off to save the tree).

After the water has receded, technical measures need to be taken to help the plants recover, especially creating drainage conditions by digging additional ditches or cutting small trenches between rows of trees in the garden to drain the water quickly, ensuring that there is no more stagnant water in the garden.

After the soil is dry, use a rake to lightly scrape the top layer of soil to break the crust, allowing air to flow down easily and providing oxygen for the roots to breathe better. This is very important for the roots to recover quickly.

Mr. Nguyen Van Liem - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, recommends: Do not be impatient during the recovery period after the water recedes, because during the period when the garden is flooded, the roots are often easily damaged.

Therefore, when the plant is in a weak condition and has not yet recovered, it is absolutely not necessary to apply chemical fertilizers immediately. You must wait until the plant has fully recovered before starting to apply fertilizer again.

Because at this time, even if fertilizer is applied, the plant cannot absorb it, causing waste of fertilizer and also counterproductive because chemical fertilizers can affect the development of young roots.

This stage focuses on cleaning the garden by collecting plant debris, cutting off damaged or diseased branches, and spreading lime powder on the bed surface or directly on the base.

At the same time, actively prevent root rot caused by fungi with antagonistic fungi. You can spray additional trace elements or root stimulants to help the plant's roots recover quickly.

When the tree shows signs of recovery such as many young roots, new shoots, new leaves, etc., fertilize with balanced NPK mixture, continue to add manure, organic microbial fertilizer Trichoderma, Trico-DHCT.

Cover the base with rotten straw or covering material (30-50cm from the base), and water sufficiently on hot days to avoid dehydration.
