Correcting the trend of creating unhealthy reputations

Việt NamViệt Nam06/11/2023

The unhealthy trend of creating or maintaining reputation is not new but is becoming more and more serious with offensive behaviors that negatively affect the public. This trend needs to be corrected not only by "soft rules" but also by strong action from authorities with legal sanctions that are strong enough to deter.

Creating a reputation that defies norms?

Celebrities are people who are known to the public for their talent and success in a certain field. They bring benefits and good values to society through their talent and specific actions. Creating and maintaining a reputation to affirm one's own value is a legitimate need, a motivation to strive in general and in the field of art and entertainment in particular. However, in reality, many people today have a distorted perception of fame, leading to creating a reputation through unhealthy behaviors, regardless of boundaries, ethical standards and even the law.

It is undeniable that the halo, economic benefits, and even power that come from fame are huge. This is also one of the main reasons why many people in the entertainment industry seek fame at all costs. Some people choose to create scandals, show off their bodies, and do all kinds of ridiculous things... to attract crowds, to please a part of the public. Not to mention, the appearance of young "idols" like mushrooms after rain makes many people mistakenly think that becoming famous is easy. Their greatest "contribution" is probably nude photos, love scandals to create "drama" that stirs up the online community. Perhaps, they confuse fame with scandal?!

In addition, frivolous and excessive praise from the public will create virtual values, making artists easily misunderstand and crave fame. That is also the fastest way to make the talent and personality of the artist wear out, no longer dedicating themselves to art. In addition, some event companies, "managers", and crews actively take care of and promote artists by all means with the aim of increasing advertising, increasing income... From there, some artists do not know when to stop and disregard everything to become famous and make money.

It must be affirmed that creating scandals and causing noise to become famous are unhealthy trends, and in many cases, they even violate the law. Because this trend easily makes young people misunderstand the way to shape their own values in society. Instead of moving up with real ability and building a career with their true value, they choose to show off their bodies, act ridiculously, and attract crowds by all means. In addition, if the entertainment industry is a place where too many sensational, non-standard, and cheap acts "take place", real talents will have little chance to develop because their media and social networks are occupied by showing off their bodies and making crazy statements.

Rectifying cultural and entertainment space

Correcting unethical behaviors, including creating fame at all costs, regardless of ethics and laws, is necessary, contributing to building a healthy cultural and entertainment space. According to media expert Le Ngoc Son, any country needs sanctions to correct the cultural and entertainment space in its country when ethical standards or the public are not capable of changing the deviant behavior of celebrities. In fact, some countries in the world put entertainment under strict control, with strong sanctions in correcting violations.

In China, since November 2020, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television of China has issued a document on the issue of "banning" (prohibiting artistic activities, appearing on television, appearing in public) of celebrities. Accordingly, this agency requires relevant units to take measures to prevent artists who violate the law and lack ethics from appearing in public. The China Performing Industry Association also emphasized that artists who commit acts such as inciting hostility, deceiving the audience, violating the law and ethics will be condemned and banned from performing and appearing on television for 1-5 years or permanently.

In Vietnam, since 2017, the establishment of a "blacklist" of artists who violate the law has been mentioned and supported by the majority of the public. However, this content is still in the draft stage. The solution of banning broadcasts and restricting performances for artists who violate the law has also been proposed. And after many proposals, a process for handling artists and online influencers (KOLs) who violate the law and go against public morality has been built with the close coordination of two agencies: the Ministry of Information and Communications and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Accordingly, artists and influencers who violate the code of conduct for those working in the arts, are dishonest in advertising, provide false information to the public, etc., in addition to being handled according to legal regulations, the two ministries will also consider restricting their images and activities. This information was officially announced at the third quarter press conference of the Ministry of Information and Communications held in early October.

The process is there, but how to make this process work effectively and efficiently is not an easy problem. Because there have been cases of "beating the drum and abandoning the drumstick", not doing it thoroughly. And this time, if we are not determined, the story of the elephant's head and the mouse's tail will easily repeat itself.

Of course, in addition to the determination of the management agencies, the awareness of artists also plays a key role in contributing to building a healthy cultural and entertainment space. Each artist needs to correctly perceive that the true value of reputation is not built on the foundation of illusion and scandal. Reputation can only be achieved from real talent, from hard work, cultural foundation and the spirit of respect for the public. Only then will reputation be long-lasting and solid.
