Hanoi in February is dreamy in the cold mist, occasionally the gentle golden sunlight covers every corner of the street.

In a small room of an apartment on Nguyen Luong Bang Street (Dong Da, Hanoi), Mr. Le Van Lam (57 years old) and his wife, Ms. Hoang Thu Hoa (52 years old), meticulously fold each set of clothes of their son Le Van Nam (23 years old) into a military backpack.

Volunteered to join the army because of the desire to become a security officer

Outside the living room, the 23-year-old man was excited and eager, playing the song "Soldier's Feelings", the melody hummed:

"Put on soldier's clothes, take off student's clothes

Give it your all in the battlefield

Send all the feelings of a soldier

From the battlefield to the rear"

On February 13, Nam will leave to perform his duty as a People's Public Security officer.

"Your youth will be more beautiful, memorable, and full of pride thanks to the days you spent in the military. Take care of your health, train, and cultivate yourself well to excellently fulfill your duty to the Fatherland.

"I hope you will strive to fulfill your dream of becoming a professional police officer," Mr. Lam said, placing his hand on his son's shoulder before his son left home.

New recruit Le Van Nam was born into a family of two brothers, his parents were freelancers. No one in his family worked in the police force, but since he was a child, Nam was fascinated by the green police uniform, dreaming of becoming a People's Police officer.

He idolizes police officers who day and night hunt down criminals, ensure security and order, and maintain a peaceful life for the people and the country.

In 2020, Nam took the university entrance exam, but at that time "he was not confident in his abilities", he hesitated "fearing the possibility of not being able to pass the police academy" so he had to put his dream on hold.

Nam changed direction to take the entrance exam to the Diplomatic Academy, majoring in International Law with a total score of 26.25 points in Math, Physics, and English.

During his 4 years as a student at the Diplomatic Academy, Le Van Nam always achieved excellent student results. In July 2024, he graduated as valedictorian of the International Law major, with an IELTS score of 7.5.

With a valedictorian degree and good English skills, many job opportunities opened up for the 23-year-old man. After graduation, Nam focused on studying for the civil service exam, planning to take the exam for the Department of Law and International Treaties, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

However, by the end of 2024, when he heard that the Ministry of Public Security was recruiting citizens to perform the People's Public Security service, Nam thought to himself, "The opportunity to reach his dream has come." However, the young man was worried that his family would not agree, so he expressed his wishes and "probed" his parents' opinions.

Before their son's wish, Mr. Lam and his wife were happy, proud, and supportive because their son "has a patriotic spirit and wants to serve the Fatherland".

His own passion and the absolute support of his family urged Le Van Nam to volunteer to join the army.

After passing three preliminary rounds, the day he received the decision to join the army, the young man was overwhelmed with emotion, "crying tears of joy".

Although he knows that the upcoming time living in a military environment is full of hardships, challenges, and the sun and wind of the training ground, the new recruit is still optimistic and "determined to adapt, train his will and courage" to become more mature, disciplined, and tougher.

"Joining the People's Public Security force is the responsibility and pride of every citizen. This is also a good environment for me to train myself, improve my knowledge, skills, physical strength, and good health.

Besides, joining the police service is also the beginning of a new journey for me to strive to stay and work and contribute to the police force," Nam said, adding that he "especially likes the security sector", hoping to work at the Department of Foreign Security, Ministry of Public Security in the future.

Giving up a monthly salary of 12 million VND, volunteering to join the police force

About 30km from the new recruit Nam's house, Bui Ngoc Hai (24 years old, in Kim Bang, Ha Nam) is also eagerly waiting for the day to leave to perform his duty as a People's Police officer.

Hai was born into a family of two brothers, his parents were workers in an industrial park. Since childhood, the young man dreamed of becoming a criminal police officer, but when it came time to take the university entrance exam, he "wasn't confident in applying to police schools because he was afraid of failing".

Hai then attended the University of Industrial Economics and Technology. Graduating with honors, the automation electrical engineer worked in a cement factory, with a salary of 12 million VND/month.

However, when he heard that Ha Nam Provincial Police were recruiting citizens to perform the People's Police duty, Hai volunteered to join the army.

"No one in my family is in the police force. However, I really love and want to become a police officer. The police environment is a place to train me in courage, discipline, order, and health, helping me to become more mature," Hai shared.

Sharing the same love for the green uniform of the People's Police, twin brothers Dao Quang Trung and Dao Duc Kien (in Thanh Liem district, Ha Nam) also volunteered to join the police force to have the opportunity to be trained in a military environment.

For Trung, Kien participating in the People's Public Security service is not only to train awareness and discipline but also the sacred duty and responsibility of every citizen to the Fatherland.

Putting aside their personal plans, behind the volunteer application of the twin brothers Trung and Kien is the desire to strive to become professional police officers.
