As Tet approaches, people are having more difficulty finding Ga Gay sticky rice than in previous years. Even when ordering from the “warehouse” of this specialty in My Lung commune, Yen Lap district, the product is almost out of stock. The amount of rice is only scattered in some businesses in neighboring communes such as My Luong and Luong Son with prices 20-30% higher than last year.
Ga Gay sticky rice is a long-standing specialty of the Muong people in My Lung commune because of its delicious and unique flavor. Sticky rice cooked from this type of rice is sticky and rich, the more you hold it, the stickier it becomes and it does not stick to your hands. Anyone who has ever eaten Ga Gay sticky rice will surely not be able to forget its rustic, rich sweetness. Ga Gay sticky rice is grown from May to October, and the seeds are preserved for half a year before entering the new crop.
The decrease in output due to the impact of storms and rains has caused the Ga Gay sticky rice product to have "supply not meeting demand".
Comrade Dinh Tien Duat - Chairman of the People's Committee of My Lung Commune, Yen Lap District said: "Due to the impact of storm No. 3, 60% of the local Ga Gay sticky rice cultivation area was damaged, equivalent to over 60 hectares, with over 190 tons of rice lost. Therefore, the output of finished rice supplied to the market during the Lunar New Year this year has decreased significantly."
