The fire raged most intensely in the upscale Pacific Palisades residential area, followed by another massive blaze that burned more than 400 hectares in Eaton Canyon, northeast of Pasadena, California, and then two fires in the San Fernando Valley suburbs, NBC News reported.
Firefighters and helicopters worked to control a wildfire in Los Angeles on January 7.
California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a statewide state of emergency as nearly 30,000 people evacuated from areas affected by the wildfire. At least 220,000 homes and businesses lost power. Firefighters worked tirelessly to extinguish the blaze, but experts said dry weather and the Santa Ana monsoon, with gusts up to 160 km/h, exacerbated the fire. According to Reuters, several injuries were reported, including one firefighter. Firefighters said their immediate priority was evacuation and assistance, acknowledging they were unlikely to be able to contain the blaze in the short term.
The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced approval of a plan to provide financial assistance to affected areas. U.S. President Joe Biden said he has offered to provide all necessary federal assistance to fight the fires.
