At around 12:30, a fire broke out from a telecommunications cable line on Nguyen Cong Tru Street, Nguyen Thai Binh Ward. This line is located in front of a Thai restaurant near a chain of bank branches, 1 km from Ben Thanh Market.
A few minutes later, a fire broke out fiercely, engulfing the tangled bundle of electrical wires. Many people used mini fire extinguishers to put out the fire but were unsuccessful. The fire spread to the signboard of a nearby restaurant, sending thick black smoke inside, forcing restaurant staff and diners to flee.
Ms. Thanh Xuan, a restaurant employee, said that there were more than 30 people in the restaurant when the fire broke out. "Black smoke and heat radiated into the restaurant. Luckily, everyone in the restaurant managed to run outside in time," Ms. Xuan said. Before the fire, there were many small explosions on the power line, possibly caused by an electrical short circuit during the rain.
Fire trucks and nearly 20 firefighters arrived at the scene to put out the fire. Firefighters used water hoses to control the fire in 10 minutes. The fire did not cause any casualties, but damaged the restaurant's property.
