Processing dragon fruit branches into organic fertilizer.

The Department of Agriculture and Environment is integrating agricultural extension programs, projects, and sustainable agricultural development plans to organize training, guidance, and the development and replication of models for collecting and processing dragon fruit by-products to produce organic microbial fertilizers locally.

For each dragon fruit plant, apply 30 kg of organic microbial fertilizer made from composted dragon fruit branches, then cover the base with grass or dry straw to maximize its effectiveness.

Accordingly, the process of composting dragon fruit branches into organic fertilizer, as issued by the Southern Fruit Research Institute, includes the following steps: cut off 3-5 cm sections from weak dragon fruit branches that do not bear fruit or bear poor-quality fruit, and pile them into compost heaps of 500-1000 kg each. Simultaneously, mix 15 kg of Bacillus subtillis preparation with water at a 1:1 ratio, spray evenly onto the compost heap, and cover with a tarp to maintain moisture for the first two weeks.

In the 3rd and 5th weeks, 15 kg of Lactobacillus plantarum and BTEC preparations, dissolved in water and mixed thoroughly into the dragon fruit compost pile, were used to treat white spot disease and create an environment for beneficial microorganisms to thrive. Finally, in the 7th week, the compost was mixed with well-rotted manure, covered with a tarp, and left to compost until the 8th week. This resulted in microbial organic fertilizer that could be reused in the dragon fruit garden, improving soil nutrition and reducing the cost of chemical fertilizers.
