Chelsea's three expensive new recruits are at risk of not being able to participate in the Champions League. |
This summer, "The Blues" spent more than 160 million pounds to bring in a series of names such as Delap, Joao Pedro, Willian Estevao and Jamie Gittens. However, if they do not balance the books by selling or loaning out players, Chelsea will not be allowed to include all of their new players in the list of 25 players for the Champions League, according to UEFA's sanctions.
Last week, UEFA fined Chelsea £27m for breaching rules on squad income and expenses, and could fine the club a further £52m if they fail to meet their financial commitments. Under the agreement, Chelsea can only add new players to their European squad if the annual cost of that player is covered by cuts to existing players.
A player's annual cost is calculated by adding the amortised value of his transfer fee. For example, Delap cost £30m and signed a six-year contract. UEFA rules require the amortisation of the transfer fee over five years, meaning Chelsea will have to pay £6m a year. Add in his £100,000-a-week salary (i.e. £5.2m a year), and the total cost of qualifying for the Champions League for Delap is £11.2m.
To cover this cost, Chelsea must save an equivalent amount from selling or reducing the wages of other players. Trevoh Chalobah is the best option because he grew up in the Chelsea academy so his book value is zero, selling for 40 million pounds will be all pure profit.
But Chalobah alone is not enough. For players like Robert Sanchez, the problem is even more difficult. Sanchez arrived from Brighton for £25m, depreciated over two years, spending £10m, leaving a residual value of £15m. If Chelsea sell for less than that, they will not make a profit, which means they cannot count it as profit to open up a new player's registration slot.
Noni Madueke is said to have reached a personal agreement with Arsenal. If Madueke is sold, Chelsea can collect more money to save the financial balance. Otherwise, "The Blues" will have to watch the new players stay at home when participating in the Champions League.
