Previously, the patient often had headaches only between 9 and 10 am. After surgery, the headaches gradually subsided, the patient recovered well, and was discharged early.

68-year-old patient with fixed-time headaches discovered dangerous meningioma

About 3 months before being hospitalized, Mr. M. (68 years old, Hanoi ) started having mild headaches, appearing regularly around 9-10 am every day. Initially, he thought he was just tired or old, and that resting would help, so he did not go to the doctor. However, when this condition persisted, accompanied by a feeling of discomfort all day, seriously affecting his life, he decided to go to Hong Ngoc Hospital for a check-up.

MRI of the tumor compressing the brain

“Strangely, at that time, my head started to ache, but after resting for a while, it got better, so I was subjective. I thought that at my age, having frequent headaches was normal, but I didn’t expect to have such a dangerous tumor in my brain,” Mr. M. shared.

“The meningioma located in the right temporal region is compressing the brain tissue, causing headaches at a fixed time. Fortunately, it was detected early, so the tumor was not too large and had not invaded important functional areas, so the patient did not show any signs of sensory disturbances or motor paralysis.

However, if left for a long time and not removed immediately, the tumor will grow larger, compressing and increasing intracranial pressure, leading to severe headaches and possibly paralysis," said Associate Professor, Dr. Ha Kim Trung (30 years of experience in neurosurgery and brain surgery, Hong Ngoc Phuc Truong Minh General Hospital).

After professional consultation, doctors indicated early surgery to remove the tumor and reconstruct the dura mater to preserve brain function and end the prolonged headaches.

Timely surgery helps patients "escape" the risk of loss of sensation and paralysis of all four limbs

The surgery was performed by Associate Professor, Dr. Ha Kim Trung with meticulous preparation by the anesthesia and resuscitation team and modern equipment at Hong Ngoc Hospital.

In particular, before surgery, patients are given a multimodal anesthesia regimen before, during and after surgery to ensure safety throughout the surgery and recovery process for the patient.

“Brain surgery in general and meningioma surgery in particular are complex surgical techniques that require a very high level of precision. Because meningioma tumors are often located close to important functional areas of the brain such as: movement, sensation, hearing, etc. Therefore, in addition to the experience of the surgeon, the support of modern equipment will be an important factor to ensure that the surgery is safe and accurate to the millimeter”, Associate Professor Ha Kim Trung emphasized.

In the case of patient M, Associate Professor Ha Kim Trung conducted a thorough assessment and proposed a surgical plan to remove the tumor, combined with dural reconstruction. The surgical process was supported by a 3D C-arm machine, which helps to accurately observe the tumor location and ensure absolute precision in the operations.

Complete resection of 2cm meningioma

After more than 1 hour of surgery, the 2cm meningioma was completely removed without causing damage to the structure and function of the brain, helping the patient no longer have headaches, avoiding complications of sensory disturbances and paralysis of the limbs.

“After the surgery, I felt much lighter, the headache gradually subsided, and I no longer had pain in the morning. I ate normally and moved around comfortably. The doctors took great care of me, so I recovered quickly and was discharged from the hospital sooner than expected. I am truly grateful to Dr. Trung and the medical team at Hong Ngoc Hospital,” Mr. M. happily shared.

The patient was alert, recovered well, and discharged 5 days after surgery.

Sharing after the surgery, Associate Professor, Dr. Ha Kim Trung emphasized: Headache is a common symptom that many people often experience but is easily overlooked.

The patient was alert, recovered well, and discharged 5 days after surgery.

However, if the headache is concentrated only at a fixed time frame, especially in the morning, accompanied by signs of dizziness and nausea, it could be a warning sign of serious diseases such as meningioma or brain damage... Therefore, the patient needs to immediately go to a medical facility with a neurology and cranial nerve specialist to have a CT scan of the brain to help detect and treat promptly, avoiding neurological and motor complications.
