The Portuguese superstar's decision to be absent has sparked controversy, forcing his sister - Katia Aveiro - to speak out against the criticism.
On Instagram, Katia wrote: “Fanaticism is tiring, criticism is pointless. Society is sick. We all have families.” She said the media’s focus on Ronaldo’s absence rather than respecting the Jota family’s grief was “shameful” and “regrettable”.
Kaita also recalled the incident in 2005 when her father, Dinis Aveiro, passed away in London, while Ronaldo was training with the Portuguese national team in Russia to prepare for the 2006 World Cup qualifiers. “Although many important people attended, I can’t remember anyone. I was blinded by the pain,” Katia shared.
She said the family faced a media siege and a crowd of curious onlookers at the cemetery, turning the funeral into “chaos without any sense of gratitude.” That, she said, was why Ronaldo chose to quietly pay his respects, rather than make a public appearance.
The funeral of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva took place at the São Cosme Church (Gondomar) on the afternoon of July 5, with the participation of many relatives, friends, representatives of Liverpool FC and many local people. A mournful atmosphere enveloped the farewell ceremony of the two ill-fated brothers.
“You can never understand the pain of losing a loved one until you have experienced it,” Katia concluded, sharing an old image from the 2022 World Cup, showing Ronaldo surrounded by dozens of camera lenses. “They wanted a circus. They were wrong. Respect is invisible.”
