After a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, US President Donald Trump said, "President Putin has made it very clear that he must respond to Ukraine's recent airport attack." It can be said that President Trump has essentially accepted or supported Moscow's large-scale retaliation. For President Trump, if he does not know how President Putin acts, the US will have no reason to act when the US mainland is attacked in the future. From the basic situation, Moscow is ready for a large-scale counterattack on the military, economic, political and diplomatic front.
The Ukrainian Security Service's Spider Web operation on June 1 was successful, causing huge military , political and strategic losses to Russia; but it could also be a strategic turning point in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, as the codename of Russia's counteroffensive operation has been confirmed, and the "surgical strike" operation could be included in the plan list. Ukraine's direct attack on Russia's strategic nuclear forces has reached Russia's bottom line; it is considered the "last straw" that made President Putin determined to cross the "red line" and launch a large-scale military campaign against Ukraine. Russia's Sputnik news agency and other media outlets have confirmed that Moscow has named this large-scale retaliatory operation "Operation Wings". But unlike before, this time the Russian military (RFAF) will directly target key personnel in Ukraine's political, military and security systems. According to a report by Russia's Tsargrad TV, Dr. Konstantin Sivkov, deputy director of the Russian Academy of Artillery and Missile Sciences, revealed accurate information that Russian missiles targeted four important targets, including the Ukrainian Presidential Palace, the Ukrainian Military Intelligence Building, the Ukrainian General Staff Building, and the Ukrainian Security Service Building, among other important targets. These four buildings are not only symbols of Ukrainian state power, but also Kiev’s wartime command and control and decision-making centers. It is clear that Russia has changed its previous strategy of carrying out “surgical strikes” as before. This shows that the Russia-Ukraine conflict has taken a major turn.
Deputy Chairman of Russia's Security Council, Mr. Medvedev, has warned that "all opponents will be blown away" and stressed that the goal will be "complete destruction of the enemy," rather than accepting a compromise peace. President Putin has made it clear that the old red lines of attack will no longer exist and that Russia's counterattack and retaliation will have no limits. Once Russia launches a “surgical strike” campaign, it means that the Russia-Ukraine conflict will move from a protracted war of attrition to a new strategic phase; focused on eliminating the enemy’s leadership, which contains deep military logic and political calculations. Sivkov revealed that the operation will be carried out during the day, to maximize the deterrent effect and that Russia is expected to neutralize Ukraine's highest command centers. Russia's actions this time reflect a repositioning of the nature of the war. The purpose of the offensive campaign is to destroy Ukraine's war potential and will to resist. Russia's retaliation this time combines military objectives with psychological warfare, not only weakening the opponent's material foundation but also hitting the opponent's spirit, creating multi-dimensional strategic pressure.
The nature and rules of the Russo-Ukrainian war are being redefined by Russia, and the toughest test for Ukraine has come. An important tactical “upgrade” in the Russian military’s attack plan this time is coordinated attacks in multiple waves. The first round of attacks would concentrate firepower to immediately destroy infrastructure such as electricity, transportation and communications, leaving Ukraine with no breathing space. This would be followed by the systematic destruction of the four core targets mentioned above. Moscow’s carefully choreographed “symphony of death” is ticking away, forcing President Zelensky to make a desperate plea for help from the West. But Russia’s retaliation has only just begun; the Russian newspaper Izvestia, citing internal sources, said a hit list targeting the remaining 25% of Ukraine’s defense production capacity has been drawn up and “larger-scale retaliation is coming.” For Ukraine, if a ceasefire cannot be achieved in time, the consequences will be devastating. President Zelensky wrote on June 6: "Now is the time for the United States, Europe and the world to end this war by putting pressure on Russia. Countries that do not do so will be considered accomplices." Clearly, the situation is dire, and President Zelensky can only hope that the United States and Europe will prevent Russia from continuing its retaliatory attacks.
Faced with the massive Russian offensive, Kiev has little effective countermeasures. There are signs that Washington has accepted Moscow's retaliatory actions. This change in position has become an important variable affecting the strategic balance between Russia and Ukraine. (photo source: Military Review, Ukrinform, Kyiv Post, RIA Novosti).
