The World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and the Gavi Vaccine Alliance say the catch-up vaccination campaign for children whose vaccinations were interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic is nearing its goal of reaching 21 million children.
By the end of 2025, the campaign will have reached approximately 18.3 million children aged 1 to 5 years in 36 countries across Africa and Asia, deploying over 100 million doses of vaccine. Of these, about 12.3 million children are receiving their first vaccination and 15 million have never been vaccinated against measles.
The WHO warns that measles outbreaks are on the rise globally, with around 11 million cases expected in 2024, while many children are still missing routine vaccinations. Health organizations believe that maintaining resources, combating misinformation about vaccines, and strengthening public trust are key factors in preventing a resurgence of the disease.
