At 12:25 this afternoon , Vietnam Railways completed the technical tunnel clearance, testing the load with freight trains through Chi Thanh tunnel safely . Before that, at 11:45, the railway industry carried out the construction train clearance . Accordingly, the ASY22 freight train, pulling 23 cars , with a load of 939 tons, passed through Chi Thanh tunnel safely at 12:25 , after 10 days of interruption due to the landslide incident in Chi Thanh railway tunnel (Tuy Hoa, Phu Yen ) . Thus, from noon today , all trains will be able to pass through Chi Thanh tunnel at a speed of 5km/h. It is expected that train SE9 will be the first passenger train to pass through the tunnel at around 1: 430 this afternoon with about 200 passengers.
As reported, at 9:50 a.m. on May 21, during the construction of the Chi Thanh tunnel (km 1,168+700 of the Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City railway line), a landslide occurred in the tunnel, about 160m from the northern tunnel entrance . The incident caused soil and rocks to completely cover the width of the tunnel , forcing the closure of the railway section between La Hai station (Dong Xuan district, Phu Yen province) and Chi Thanh station (Tuy An district, Phu Yen province).
After the incident, Vietnam Railway Corporation directed Phu Khanh Railway Operation Branch, Railway Infrastructure Management Sub-Committee Region 3 and Phu Khanh Railway Joint Stock Company to mobilize human resources and equipment to support the investor and contractor to resolve the incident.
The incident caused serious disruption to railway traffic and heavy damage. Specifically:
To maintain transportation operations, minimize damage and impact on passengers, during the 10 days of the incident (from May 21 to May 31, 2024), Vietnam Railways Corporation safely transported 36,235 passengers on 129 trains by car between La Hai station (Dong Xuan district, Phu Yen province) and Tuy Hoa station (Tuy Hoa city, Phu Yen province) . While waiting for the transfer, passengers were served free meals and drinks. The incident handling work was regularly announced and updated by the Railway industry to passengers and cargo owners; the organization of passenger service on the train and at the station was thoughtful ; however, due to concerns that the incident would affect the schedule, thousands of passengers returned their tickets.
Regarding goods, due to the impact of the incident, hundreds of freight trains had to stop along the way or wait for plans at the departure stations. Although the railway industry had to transfer some trains by road to ensure progress, due to the long time to fix the incident, many shippers transporting frozen goods, food, consumer goods, etc. canceled their orders for transport by railway , causing great damage in the short and long term .
This incident has made it difficult for the Vietnam Railways industry to implement its 2024 production and business plan because previously, the railway industry also suffered heavy losses due to the Bai Gio tunnel incident.
