The painful divorce attracted much public and media attention – perhaps Dang Le Nguyen Vu also saw it as a great challenge as he resolved to find definitive answers to questions about his philosophy of life, worldview , and cosmology.
But according to him, the challenge came even earlier, when he began practicing 49-day fasting meditation in the mountains "to shut off the needs of the body so that he could overcome the mundane barriers to intellectual and spiritual development."
Fasting and meditation are still practiced in folk traditions, but the 2013 hunger strike and silent meditation by the UK sparked much speculation about his "unexplainable" mental state. He claimed that the event successfully "defeated his previously arrogant and rebellious ego." He considered it a way to overcome "the trials and purification of the body."
Following that, he personally underwent a "Trial and Purification of Mind and Spirit" by living in seclusion in a cave in M'Drak. Only recently did he receive a small number of outside visitors and revive public interest through media reports.
The unusual images of the life, home, horse farm, and luxury cars of the Chairman of Trung Nguyen Coffee Group continue to attract public attention.
He lived there with “absolute discipline, absolute goodness, and absolute faith” to study and write diagrams and formulas for the multifaceted development that he desired.
In the document describing "Continuing the intense challenge in every moment of existence," what does he have to face?
The document states: "In the face of doubts, slander, betrayal, sabotage, and even harm from those dearest to him, or from those currently holding worldly power, and collective ignorance...", he still maintained his strict discipline, genuine wisdom, and kind heart.
He viewed all the difficulties and pain as "tests" that he had to overcome.
In a recent meeting at the end of June 2023, while hosting journalist Hoai Thanh (Dan Tri Newspaper) and two old friends at a restaurant in M'Drak, "The Coffee King" Dang Le Nguyen Vu spoke about his work and shared many personal thoughts.
"I'm happy to welcome you all with kind hearts, but honestly, I don't want to meet anyone at all. You have to understand the message, you have to know what to do; just having coffee and chatting won't solve anything."
"...A perfect human being has three things: Body - Mind - Intellect. The body is the physical form. The intellect is learning and understanding. But the most important is the mind. The light of the mind is the true light."
"Living in harmony with all things, we must respect them, not destroy them. Mankind today must know two things to fear: Firstly, not knowing our origins and therefore not showing respect. Secondly, not being kind enough to one another and to the creations of nature."
According to him, humans also possess a "gaseous state" that science has yet to discover. "We have to learn about it gradually."
He said it felt like "countries around the world were returning to nationalism. But our country seems to be clinging to local clans. There's no longer the unity we had during the war against America when we had strength."
"...I have written many things, summarizing history, the past, examining all of humanity's existence on a broad scale, and designing the future. There is a climate and environmental crisis caused by destruction; how can we overcome it? We must go to the root of the problem. I say minimizing ABCs will never solve the problem."
We must address the root cause through a wise way of life, by creating a way of life. It's not difficult; the difficulty lies in not knowing the way. We must have the light to know the way. No more poverty, suffering, complete wealth..."
After writing the article "Through Solitude, Words No One Understands," journalist Hoài Thanh commented: "He is very kind in his way of speaking, always consistent and certain about what he shares, even if the person he's talking to may not fully understand."
Before seeing his guests out of the cave, the "Coffee King" said: "You have to practice hard. This knowledge must be thoroughly studied before you can apply it to life."
• During nearly 10 years of "hiding" in the restaurant, Dang Le Nguyen Vu knew everything that was happening outside. Occasionally, he would drive himself back to Saigon without going to the Trung Nguyen headquarters. The security guards were startled to realize that "the Chairman's car had just passed by."
Later, I learned that he wandered alone, meeting poor street vendors and lottery ticket sellers. They happily told him many stories, and he was very happy, compassionate, surprised, and impressed to see that "just giving them a small amount of money - one million dong - made them feel so happy and moved."
Dang Le Nguyen Vu is perhaps the businessman who has received the most media attention and is followed by the public the most, both those who know him well and those who find him strange. On YouTube, there are countless clips circulating with questions like "Is Mr. Vu normal?", alongside many clips praising him as a successful idol.
Well... freedom of feeling is everyone's right. But it's clear he's a successful, wealthy businessman who chooses a strict lifestyle, a unique individual constantly tormented by the desire to invent and contribute. He once said in an interview: "Every citizen has the right to think big."
Ultimately, that was a person whose individual characteristics were clearly defined: thinking big and being kind.
