The person who initiated the idea of hanging lanterns at the stall was Ms. Vo Hoang Binh (47 years old, Quarter 3, Ward 3, Tay Ninh City), a beverage vendor in the market. “It’s almost Tet, but seeing the market so deserted, I came up with the idea of buying some lanterns to decorate the space of the shop to make it bright, prominent and fun,” Ms. Binh said.
Initially, Ms. Binh ordered 300 lanterns of all colors, sizes, and types, then gave each vendor 1-2 to hang on the counter, as a thank you to the “customers” who supported the coffee and soft drinks every day. Seeing how beautiful they were, the vendors bought a few more, some even ordered dozens of yellow, green, and red lanterns to hang in front of their counters.
After just a few days, the simple, deserted market became brilliant with thousands of colorful lanterns. “Thanks to the lanterns, the whole Ward 3 market is happy. We are excited to trade, and buyers are also bustling,” Ms. Binh said excitedly. She did not expect that this idea would be welcomed by many people in the market, including the Market Management Board.
“I am very happy to receive everyone’s support. The whole market is bustling, the Tet atmosphere seems to be getting closer,” Ms. Binh said excitedly.
Since the whole market was decorated with paper lanterns, the traders and shoppers all felt happy and excited to trade and buy more. Ms. Mai Thi Tuyet Lan, a trader selling chicken and duck eggs at Ward 3 Market, said: “I have been trading for over 30 years, but I have never seen the Tet atmosphere as bustling as this year. The whole market was decorated so beautifully that many shoppers were amazed and happy to buy. Since then, the number of people going to the market has increased significantly, very happy!”
Similarly, Ms. Truong Thu Hao, the owner of a pork stall, was also excited to put many decorative lanterns on her stall. “Everyone responded, the new market is more brilliant and beautiful. We, the sellers, are eye-catching, and the market-goers are equally supportive. The whole market is celebrating Tet!” Ms. Hao said with a smile.
Building a civilized, bright and beautiful market
Ward 3 Market (commonly known as Dat Thanh Market) has been established for a long time and has become a familiar shopping address for local people. The market has an area of over 6,700m2 , with nearly 500 small traders trading in many types of food, foodstuffs and consumer goods, essentials.
Unlike previous years, Ward 3 market this year brought an early Tet atmosphere to people when they came to shop. The colorful market scene was spread by word of mouth, becoming a unique highlight, attracting many people to come shop, take pictures, and experience the Tet atmosphere that filled every corner of the market.
Ms. Vo Thi Nhi (37 years old, Ward 3, Tay Ninh city) shared: “I have been going to this market for many years, but the market scene really surprised me. It is so beautiful, seeing them hanging colorful lanterns makes me feel excited, feeling that Tet is near, making me like going to the market even more. I hope that, with the investment in Tet decorations by the traders, the market will have more customers coming to support. The traders will have good luck selling more during this Tet holiday.”
Not only creating surprises for the people, with the investment and consensus in decorating the Tet holiday of the whole market, the traders also surprised the Ward 3 Market Management Board. Mr. Le Quoc Hung - Deputy Head of Ward 3 Market Management Board said that the decoration of Tet lanterns was done spontaneously by the traders, not the policy of the Market Management Board, but this contributed to making the market more beautiful and bustling, so the Market Management Board encouraged the traders to do it. This is also an action showing solidarity, attachment, and consensus in business and trading of the traders.
“Since the market was decorated like this, the number of people going to the market has increased. This is a good sign for the traders in the market,” said Mr. Hung.
In recent years, with the development of supermarket systems, the buying and selling situation of traditional markets in general, Ward 3 market in particular, has been quite gloomy. To attract people to go to the market, traders have adapted to new business models such as: cashless markets, selling on social platforms Zalo, Facebook, home delivery services... However, with the efforts of the management unit, traders in the movement to build civilized markets, over the years, Ward 3 market has been considered one of the civilized markets of Tay Ninh city, serving the shopping needs of people in the area with a variety of diverse and rich products.
