Tasks considered advantageous for students in engineering and technology (STEM) fields, such as basic coding or data processing, are being automated by AI. Similarly, AI can also handle tasks such as content writing, translation, and communication.
This shows that no industry is as "absolutely secure" as it once was. In reality, many young people don't work in their field of study after graduation. Some study technology but switch to business, while others study languages but work in different fields. Even industries once considered "hot" don't guarantee employment after graduation because job requirements are becoming increasingly demanding...
Therefore, instead of trying to choose a "surefire" major for their children, parents should focus more on how their children will learn and what they will prepare for in the future. Regardless of the major, a solid foundation of specialized knowledge is essential. More importantly, they need the ability to apply that knowledge to real-world situations and continuously update their knowledge and skills. If studying technology, they need to understand more about people and market demands. If studying social sciences, they also need to know how to utilize technology to support their work.
Most importantly, adaptability is key because the job market changes very rapidly; what you learn today may no longer be relevant a few years from now. If you only focus on your degree, it's easy to fall behind. But if you have a habit of continuous learning, are willing to change and reinvent yourself, opportunities will always be available.
Perhaps the best thing parents can do for their children is not to choose a "safe" path for them, but to equip them with the necessary tools to confidently walk their own path.
