The exam was emotionally charged and effectively differentiated students' abilities.

On the morning of May 25th, more than 49,300 students in Nghe An province began the first subject of the entrance exam for 10th grade high school in the 2026-2027 school year.

In the reading comprehension section (4 points), the chosen text is the poem "The Flame of Childhood" by poet Xuan Quynh. The work recreates childhood memories during the war years with the image of a simple but idealistic soldier, thereby evoking gratitude towards the older generation who sacrificed for the country.

Huynh Thuc Khang High School had the highest number of applicants with 2,062 applications.

The questions are structured to move from recognition to application. Candidates must identify the lyrical persona, point out the historical event mentioned in the text, analyze the rhetorical devices in the line "The song still flows like crashing waves," and explain the meaning of the image of the soldier's "tattered shoes."

The final question asks students to relate and express their thoughts on the significance of childhood memories for each individual.

In the essay section (6 points), the literary analysis question requires students to write a paragraph of approximately 200 words analyzing the image of "fire" in the poem.

Meanwhile, the social commentary question, stating, "History is the foundation for the present and the future," required candidates to propose solutions to spread the valuable values of national history.

Nguyen Cao Thuy Duong, a student from Hung Dung Secondary School, said that the first few questions were quite easy, and most candidates could answer them. However, from questions 4 and 5 onwards, the exam began to differentiate students, requiring them not only to understand the text's content but also to analyze it, relate it to real-life situations, and express their personal opinions.

"I particularly love this topic because history is not just about past events, but also serves as a foundation for each person to cultivate character, patriotism, and a sense of their roots," Thuy Duong shared.

The exam questions were not designed to trick the students.

Many teachers believe that this year's exam closely follows the reform guidelines, focusing on assessing students' ability to appreciate, think critically, and apply knowledge rather than rote memorization. The materials are not overly difficult but have sufficient depth to evoke emotions, helping students express their sincere thoughts about history, national traditions, and the responsibilities of today's youth.
