According to the Vietnam Center for Disease Control (HCDC), dengue fever is one of the infectious diseases with a rapidly increasing rate worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are approximately 100-400 million cases of dengue virus infection each year, with millions exhibiting clinical symptoms and many cases progressing to severe, life-threatening conditions.
The WHO reports that the number of dengue fever cases reported globally has increased from over 500,000 in 2000 to 14.6 million in 2024, the highest level ever recorded.
In Vietnam, dengue fever is endemic year-round and often breaks out strongly during the rainy season. In recent years, many localities, especially in the South, have consistently recorded high numbers of cases. This indicates that the disease is no longer seasonal but has become a long-term public health challenge.
Besides affecting health, dengue fever also places a burden on families and society. Patients often have to miss school or work for many days; severe cases may require intensive care, increasing healthcare and treatment costs.
Experts warn that anyone is at risk of contracting the disease. Because there are four different types of dengue virus, a person can contract dengue fever multiple times in their lifetime. Notably, the risk of severe complications may increase with reinfection by a different type of virus than the previous infection.
To effectively prevent the disease, the health sector recommends that people maintain measures to control disease-carrying mosquitoes such as covering water containers tightly, changing the water in flower vases regularly, removing items that can collect water, and maintaining a clean living environment.
Furthermore, the dengue vaccine is considered a proactive preventive tool that helps reduce the risk of contracting the disease and limit the number of severe cases. Combining vaccination, larval control, mosquito eradication, and raising community awareness will contribute to building a sustainable "shield" against dengue fever.
Experts emphasize that proactively preventing disease early on not only protects the health of each individual but also contributes to reducing the risk of outbreaks in the community.
