Diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Morocco were established in 1961; after a 30-year hiatus, the two countries resumed relations in 1991 and have achieved many cooperative successes in various fields, especially from 2004 to the present.
Regarding high-level delegation exchanges, most recently, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan paid an official visit to Morocco (March 2019) and the Speaker of the Moroccan House of Representatives, Habib El Malki, paid an official visit to Vietnam (December 2017). Both sides actively support each other in multilateral forums.
Economically, cooperation focuses on trade, with bilateral trade turnover steadily increasing annually (13-14%), from US$169.2 million in 2017 to over US$300 million in 2024; in which Vietnam mainly exports electronic goods, coffee, pepper, textiles, fabrics, and various types of yarn to Morocco; and imports animal feed, fertilizers, etc.
Cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries has developed well. Bilaterally, the two sides signed a cooperation agreement during the official visit of the Speaker of the Moroccan House of Representatives, Habib El Malki, to Vietnam (December 2017); they regularly exchange information and maintain high-level contacts and contacts at the committee, advisory, and support levels of the parliaments.
In terms of multilateral relations, both sides maintain contact and consultations at forums such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Francophone Parliamentary Assembly (APF).
With the strong support of the Vietnamese National Assembly - the Chair of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) in 2020, the Moroccan Parliament was officially admitted as an AIPA Observer (September 2020).
During the visit, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man is expected to hold meetings and talks with high-ranking Moroccan leaders; attend a seminar on legal policies to promote economic, trade, and investment cooperation between Vietnam and Morocco; meet with the Chairman of the Morocco-Vietnam Friendship Association and the Chairman of the Morocco-Vietnam Parliamentary Friendship Group; and meet with staff of the Embassy and the Vietnamese community in Morocco…
This is the first official visit of a key Vietnamese leader to Morocco in six years. The visit by the Speaker of the National Assembly will create strong momentum for both sides to further promote cooperation, especially in trade, investment, agriculture, and tourism, aiming for a bilateral trade turnover of US$500 million in the coming years.
