BHG - Implementing the National Target Program, Quan Ba district has supported poor households in Din San village, Quyet Tien commune to change their crop structure to growing cucumbers according to the chain, and guarantee the output of products. From there, it has helped many households grasp science and technology in production and bring in a good income, improving their family life.

Mr. Tan Dau Quay, a poor Dao family in Din San village, is very happy because the first melon crop has been harvested. This year, his family participated in a chain-linked cucumber growing project supported by Quan Ba district. Mr. Quay said: “My family received VND10.8 million from the State to grow cucumbers on 0.5 hectares. My family invested an additional VND5 million to grow G7 melon varieties with high yields, suitable for local climate conditions and the market. Participating in the melon growing project, I was instructed by the commune agricultural extension officer on planting and care techniques. After more than 2 months, the melon plants were harvested at a price of VND5,000/kg. After the first harvest, after deducting expenses, my family earned VND84 million. Seeing the effectiveness of growing cucumbers, I invested to expand the area for the next crop.”

Similar to Mr. Quay's household, Mr. Thao Van Chao's household, a Mong ethnic group in Din San village, also registered to participate in the cucumber growing project with an area of 0.5 ha and had a good income. This year, Din San village has 13 poor and near-poor households participating in the cucumber growing project according to the value chain, with a scale of 5.05 ha. The households are supported with 100% of seeds, fertilizers and pesticides, with a total support cost of over 109 million VND, the support rate is 21.6 million VND/ha. The households participating in the project will contribute with production land, labor, manure and necessary conditions for effective production. After harvest, the State will recover 20% of the investment cost, which is 21.8 million VND.

Assessing the effectiveness of the project, Vice Chairman of Quyet Tien Commune People's Committee, Nguyen Van Tuan said: Immediately after receiving the policy and decision to allocate capital for the National Target Program of the District People's Committee, the Commune People's Committee directed relevant departments to advise, organize village meetings, guide and orient people to choose and build appropriate production development support models, promote local advantages, ensure compliance with regulations and production development orientation of the province and district. After the project implementation period from early May to July, the cucumber tree yielded 40 tons/ha, with an output of 202 tons. Through actual assessment, some households had an income of over 84 million VND/0.5ha/crop. In addition to the registered area, some households participating in the project invested in additional planting to increase their family income, such as Mr. Tan Dau Quay's household. The above results show that the effectiveness of the cucumber growing project brings economic value 4 times higher than some traditional crops.

The project has overcome the situation of fragmented and small-scale production, contributing to increasing the land use coefficient, improving economic efficiency per unit area, applying science and technology to production to increase productivity and product quality. Creating conditions for poor and near-poor households to access capital, escape poverty, contribute to solving local jobs, increasing income, improving life, creating livelihoods for households. Thanks to technical guidance, advice and supervision, the awareness of producers on the use of pesticides has been improved. Significantly reducing the impact of pesticides on the environment. Contributing to improving the environment, improving the quality of life of people in the project area and creating quality products for consumers.
