Asia-Pacific region to lead green hydrogen development
According to the eighth power plan, the development of hydrogen production and application in the fields of industry, transportation, electricity production and green energy sources is strongly promoted in Vietnam. Green hydrogen also has great potential for export to developed countries, which is urgent in the energy transition process in Vietnam.
According to Mr. Jean Gourp - Director of Asia - Pacific at John Cockerill Group, the Asia - Pacific region will lead the green hydrogen development process, and also receive the most investment capital from now to the next 5 years.
"New initiatives and technologies in this field are being promoted for investment development very quickly. This is the reason why the green hydrogen market will develop strongly in the coming time, in which Vietnam will be a major center in the region. We believe in the future with the potential of green hydrogen in reducing carbon emissions of industry and the economy," he said.
It is expected that Vietnam is in a favorable position to become a leading country in Asia in developing green hydrogen, but Mr. Markus Bissel - Head of Energy Efficiency, GIZ Energy Support Program - said that there are still many challenges. In which, vacant land area is limited compared to countries developing green hydrogen in the world. Regarding production and transportation costs, Vietnam is higher than other countries, especially in Asia.
Sharing her experience in developing this energy source, Ms. Ji Young Lee - Head of Global Hydrogen Business Group, SK E&S - said that this unit has liquefied hydrogen gas for easier transportation. There are transfer stations, coordinating with transporters to liquefy gas. In addition, the Government also supports with many corridor policies to attract investors to participate.
"In each area of the ecosystem, there is support and coordination from the Government and businesses. International integration and participation of relevant units will create a successful transition in this energy source," said Ms. Ji Young Lee.
Hydrogen orientation will reach about 10% of final energy demand
Mr. Dang Hai Anh - Head of Petroleum Department, Department of Petroleum and Coal, Ministry of Industry and Trade - said that by 2050, the orientation will be to promote the application of hydrogen energy and hydrogen-derived fuels in the energy sector. In addition, the market for hydrogen-derived energy consumption will be developed according to market mechanisms, bringing the proportion of hydrogen energy to about 10% of final energy demand.
At the same time, develop and complete the infrastructure system for storing, distributing and using hydrogen with a market size of about 10 - 20 million tons/year. Expand and complete hydrogen distribution systems for the transportation sector nationwide in line with the general trend of the world.
He proposed to build pilot centers, small and medium-sized green hydrogen energy production and distribution facilities that are suitable for safety assurance. At the same time, it is necessary to deploy new technologies, apply hydrogen energy production technology and gradually master carbon capture and utilization technology associated with the hydrogen production process from other energies.
Regarding human resources, it is necessary to develop a development plan to serve the green hydrogen energy industry, as well as strengthen training cooperation with domestic and foreign institutions.
