Historian Pedro Da Oliveira, Secretary General of the Brazil-Vietnam Friendship Association.

According to the Secretary General of the Brazil-Vietnam Friendship Association, Pedro da Oliviera, when talking about the relationship between Brazil and Vietnam, we cannot help but mention the presence of President Ho Chi Minh in the city of Rio de Janeiro in 1912. He was the one who laid the foundation for the Vietnam-Brazil relationship, serving as a cultural, social, economic and political bridge between the two countries.

Mr. Oliviera pointed out that in an important article written by President Ho Chi Minh in 1924 and published in the newspaper "The Miserable" founded by him in Paris with the title "Class Solidarity", Uncle Ho told the story of José Leandro da Silva, a Brazilian sailor who fought to protect the rights of workers but was brought to trial and then exonerated in a famous trial in Brazilian history.

Brazilian historians believe that the content of this article may have been based on conversations between comrade Nguyen Ai Quoc and Brazilian Communist Party delegate Rodolfo Coutinho during a political meeting in Moscow in 1924.

In addition, Mr. Oliviera also mentioned the Chibata Uprising (Revuelta de la Chibata) that broke out in 1911, a year before comrade Nguyen Ai Quoc arrived in Rio de Janeiro. This was a revolutionary movement of Brazilian sailors against the mistreatment of their ship owners and they won.

The young Nguyen Ai Quoc lived with these workers and learned about their revolutionary movement. Nguyen Ai Quoc lived and worked for many months in the Santa Teresa and Lapa neighborhoods in the center of Rio de Janeiro.

Secretary General of the Brazil-Vietnam Friendship Association Oliviero expressed his honor and pride when Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh inaugurated a memorial plaque honoring President Ho Chi Minh in Santa Teresa to commemorate the beloved leader not only of the Vietnamese people but also of many international friends.

Highlighting President Lula da Silva’s visit to Vietnam, Mr. Oliviera expressed his belief that the visit will contribute significantly to strengthening trade and diplomatic relations between the two dynamic economies. Last year, trade turnover between the two countries reached nearly 8 billion USD. The semiconductor and aerospace industries are two areas with great potential in which the two sides can strengthen cooperation in the future.

Mr. Oliviera appreciated the fact that Brazil and Vietnam upgraded their relationship to a Strategic Partnership in November 2024 on the occasion of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's visit to Brazil and attendance at the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, on the occasion of the two countries celebrating the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations. According to him, the two countries still have a lot of potential to expand cooperation in agriculture, tropical crop research, electronics, automobile manufacturing, culture and sports.

The Secretary General of the Brazil-Vietnam Friendship Association also emphasized that Brazil will host the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30) in November. Therefore, President Lula da Silva's visit to Vietnam also aims to promote the international community's participation in commitments to protect the world's environment.

On the side of the Brazil-Vietnam Friendship Association, Mr. Oliviera affirmed that he will continue to make efforts to contribute to further deepening the solidarity, friendship and cooperation between Brazil and Vietnam in the future.
