Information from Bach Mai Hospital shows that mental disorders due to alcohol use are common and quite dangerous for the alcohol user and those around them. They cannot control their emotions and behaviors, causing aggression and endangering others.
If paranoia, hallucinations and rampant behavioral disorders are not detected and intervened promptly, they can lead to the risk of accidents and death.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, the symptoms of drinking too much alcohol causing alcohol poisoning include: mental disorders, loss of control, frequent quarrels, verbal or physical assaults on others, unstable emotions, loss of attention, reduced ability to think, in addition to other signs such as unsteady walking, slurred speech, reduced consciousness, red face, etc.
Alcoholic psychosis is a state closely related to alcohol use, manifested by emotional and behavioral disorders, hallucinations (such as auditory or visual hallucinations...), paranoia such as unreasonable suspicion and jealousy, initially only when drunk, later appearing frequently and very unreasonably, sometimes accompanied by thoughts of being poisoned by one's wife, or thoughts of being followed, being harmed leading to self-defense or family conflicts, even attacking others.
These states often appear during or immediately after alcohol use. Dangerous cases like this are very common during Tet holiday because alcoholic psychosis manifests prominently within 48 hours of alcohol use, especially in chronic alcoholics.
In addition, delirium tremens is an acute and severe psychotic state, often occurring in chronic alcoholics, when the body is weakened or due to a new disease (such as infection, trauma, etc.).
Alcohol withdrawal can also occur after relative or absolute alcohol withdrawal or after consuming large amounts of alcohol during the Tet holiday.
At onset, the patient may suddenly or gradually experience fatigue, loss of appetite, sleep disorders, and autonomic nervous system disorders.
Then the symptoms gradually become more severe, such as emotional changes: panic, anxiety, even visual hallucinations of seeing animals or people coming to kill you that are not real...
More severe cases include delirium or confusion, vivid illusions and hallucinations, severe tremors (tremors of limbs, tongue, sweating, mild fever, etc.). There may even be paranoia, agitation, insomnia, etc.
In addition, people who use alcohol may develop symptoms of depression, which are often atypical.
First is a decrease in positive emotions, feelings of depression, sadness, irritability, mood swings, instability, vulnerability, often feeling tired, loss of vitality, decreased activity, decreased interest and pleasure, whether going out or wishing a happy new year.
Sometimes accompanied by sleep disturbances such as insomnia or nightmares. Depressive symptoms usually begin within two weeks of alcohol use and last for more than 48 hours.
Some cases have had depression before, when Tet comes, the feeling of loneliness without family around, economic pressure to buy Tet, year-end work pressure, busy preparing for Tet, changing living environment with family, ... increases personal sadness, the patient is more likely to turn to alcohol to "relieve" from which makes their mood worse and causes more psychological and health problems.
In some cases, chronic alcohol use can cause alcohol-induced amnesia, in which the patient even forgets recent events, reducing efficiency in work and life, and even progressing to the point where they have to depend on others.
Pregnant women who drink alcohol also affect their own health. Alcohol will make the mother drunk, tired, have headaches, cause physical and mental disorders and can increase the risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, affect the physical, mental and intellectual development of the child, and cause poisoning to the fetus.
The Department of Preventive Medicine - Ministry of Health recommends as follows: Strictly comply with the provisions of the Law on Prevention and Control of Harmful Effects of Alcohol and Beer.
Limit your alcohol intake as there is no safe level. If you do drink: no more than two units of alcohol per day for men, one unit of alcohol per day for women and no more than five days per week.
In particular, do not use alcohol in the following cases: driving a motor vehicle, operating machinery, pregnant or breastfeeding women, taking medications that react with alcohol, or having medical conditions that alcohol makes worse.
Do not participate in outdoor activities or in dangerous, unsafe places because you can easily fall, collide, get injured, etc. Absolutely do not drive after drinking alcohol or beer.
Only drink alcohol and beer of clear origin and guaranteed quality. (One unit of alcohol is equivalent to 10 grams of pure alcohol contained in a drinking solution.
Thus, one unit of alcohol is equivalent to 3/4 of a 330 ml bottle/can of beer (5%); one 330 ml glass of draft beer; one 100 ml glass of wine (13.5%); or one 30 ml shot of spirits (40%).
