Strange story of candidates taking 30 minutes to do the test and a series of incidents in the biggest university entrance exam

(Dan Tri) - Before the unbelievable incident of the invigilator losing 30 minutes of a candidate's test time, the biggest university entrance exam in the country also had other incidents.

The incident of the invigilator in the second round of the Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment exam at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) exam site causing candidates to lose about 30 minutes of their test time was surprising.

Few people would have thought that in an exam, especially the largest university entrance exam in the country, such an unbelievable situation would happen.

The invigilator at a major exam was not aware of the exam time. When the candidate in the exam room reminded him that the exam time was 8:30 as prescribed, the invigilator insisted… it was not time yet.

By the time the invigilator realized his mistake, all the candidates in the exam room were about 30 minutes behind on the test. There was no quick solution to the problem, such as giving them extra time.

Meanwhile, for candidates, this is an extremely important exam that has been prepared for a long time to get the score for university admission.

For many years, the Ho Chi Minh City National University's aptitude test has been the largest university entrance exam in the country in terms of both the number of candidates taking the test and the number of candidates using the results for admission.

This year, the exam attracted nearly 160,000 candidates to register for the Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment exam. Currently, there are up to 110educational institutions nationwide using the exam results for admission consideration.

Before the unbelievable incident mentioned above, in recent years, the competency assessment exam of Ho Chi Minh City National University has also had many other incidents.

The supervisor handed out the test papers late, and the candidates took nearly 20 minutes to do the test.

At the first round of the Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment exam held on March 30, there was also an incident where candidates "lost" time to do the test due to the invigilator's fault.

Specifically, at the An Giang University examination cluster, room P.002, candidates reported that the invigilators were slow in distributing the exam papers, causing some candidates to lose about 20 minutes of time. Lacking time, candidates had to "slow down" and this affected their test results as well as their university admission plans.

The cause was later determined to be an error in the process of distributing the exam papers, resulting in two candidates sitting close to each other receiving the same exam code. When the incident was discovered, the exam supervisors collected some exam papers for inspection before continuing to distribute the papers to the remaining candidates. This led to a delay in the exam paper distribution process.

After the incident, the leader in charge of this exam admitted that this was an unfortunate incident that happened, and there was no way for the candidates to retake the test or compensate for their points.

After the incident, the leaders of this examination cluster directly contacted and apologized to the affected candidates as well as created conditions for candidates to retake the second round of exams without paying the exam fee.

The exam was incorrect due to technical error.

In 2024, in the second round of this exam, candidates discovered that 2 questions in the exam were wrong.

Specifically in the question:

6 students E,F, G,H,K,L have different weights. K is the only one heavier than L; G is only lighter than F; H is only heavier than 2 people. The 2 third heaviest people out of 6 students are:

Option A: H

Option B: F

Option C: K

Option D: E

Later, the examination board determined that the exam was incorrect due to a technical error, the question above was missing the word "not" in the sentence "K is the only person heavier than L".

In another chemistry question, there is an extra 2 before the symbol Br2 in the chemical reaction equation "Z + 2Br2 + H2O → CH3COOH + 2 HBr".

The correct sentence should be: "Z + Br2 + H2O → CH3COOH + 2 HBr".

The Ho Chi Minh City National University's Competency Assessment Council decided to give full marks to the two technically erroneous questions for all candidates who took the test to ensure the candidates' rights.

Loss of competency assessment test

In 2023, after the first round of the Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment exam, the answers to 120 multiple-choice questions were spread on social networks.

The test is solved online with 120 multiple choice questions of code 501, exactly the same content as the questions the candidates just experienced in the exam.

According to the regulations of Ho Chi Minh City National University, this exam does not publish the exam questions and answers. At the end of the exam, candidates will have to submit all relevant documents including the multiple choice answer sheet, exam questions and scratch paper.

This is explained by the examination council of this exam that many individuals and organizations are interested in this exam. Especially the exam preparation organizations are very interested in the exam and will find a way to get information about the exam.

Centers can arrange for many people to take the test to get information. Then the organizations will synthesize from these test takers to create questions and solve the questions as a way to promote and attract candidates to practice for the test.

Incorrect test questions must be eliminated or given full marks.

After the first round of the National University's 2022 competency assessment exam, many candidates reported that the exam had at least two questions with errors. One pie chart question provided missing data and one question had two duplicate answers.

After that, the examination board of this exam will handle it in one of two ways: calculate the absolute score for that question or remove that question from the exam to ensure fairness for all candidates.
