Stories of people whose lives were transformed by the mining industry.

Báo Quảng NinhBáo Quảng Ninh08/08/2023

From the upper levels to the deepest shafts, day after day, coal miners diligently carry out their work. Despite the hardship and toil, many have dedicated their entire lives to mining. Some have only been in the profession for a few years but have already decided to stay in this work forever. All these miners share one common trait: seriousness, responsibility, and a deep love for their work and for this land.

"Sow effort, reap success."

Mining also provides them with many things, most notably a stable income at a relatively high level compared to many similar jobs. In recent years, the story of miners earning 300 million VND/year is no longer surprising in Quang Ninh . Many, thanks to their diligence, hard work, and creativity, have earned even more – 400 million VND, and some even reach 500 million VND/year. Through mining, miners have built houses, bought vehicles, acquired modern conveniences, and provided for their children's education. From distant rural areas, they have come to the mining region of Quang Ninh and have transformed their lives thanks to this profession.

Thào A Bái is from Đầm Chấu district, Yên Bái province. Like thousands of young people who left their impoverished rural areas to seek work in Quảng Ninh, Thào A Bái chose mining. When asked about how he came to the profession, Bái shared that he was fascinated by a story about mining told by a fellow villager. Wanting to escape poverty, Bái quickly decided to try his hand at the work of "eating the earthly food but working in the underworld." From then on, he became a miner at Mining Workshop 5, Quang Hanh Coal Company - TKV.

Having just started his career, Thào A Bái was assigned to the coal mining workshop using the ZH segmented frame support technology. This is a modern, safe support technology that increases the productivity of the mining face and reduces the workload for workers. Bái quickly attracted the attention of the workshop's leadership with his diligence and meticulous, responsible work attitude.

For Thào A Bái, simply by working diligently, being proactive in his work, and managing his expenses wisely, he can save at least 100 million VND each year. If he stayed in his poor hometown of Đầm Chấu, Yên Bái, he wouldn't know when he would ever accumulate that amount of money.

"On average, I earn 24-25 million VND per month, which is enough to support my life. After deducting some personal expenses, I send about 15-16 million VND back home to my family each month," Thào A Bái shared.

When asked about the secret to their high income, many furnace workers gave the same answer: hard work.

Visiting the family of Mr. Dong Van Hung, a 5/5 grade coal miner at Uong Bi Coal Company, and listening to his story of 20 years in the profession, one understands why he consistently ranks among the top earners in the workshop. In his early days, the work was arduous, mostly manual, and the salary was only a few million dong per month. But Mr. Dong Van Hung didn't give up; instead, he worked twice as hard as everyone else to quickly adapt to the underground working environment. With diligence as his motto, after 20 years, Mr. Dong Van Hung has become the highest-ranking coal miner in the unit.

From a manual laborer doing tasks like reinforcing mine tunnels, digging roofs, installing beams, erecting supports, and clearing coal, Dong Van Hung can now operate a whole range of machinery in the first fully mechanized, light-duty coal face of Uong Bi Coal Mine. Hung is also one of the highest-paid workers in Workshop K12 - averaging 25-30 million VND per month.

Earning the highest income in the workshop is also a remarkable achievement for miner Le Van Bien of Thong Nhat Coal Company - TKV. Twenty years of experience is perhaps enough for miner Le Van Bien to understand the hardships and difficulties of mining. However, even during the most challenging times, he never considered choosing another job. He even encouraged his youngest brother to follow in his footsteps in mining. To this day, Le Van Bien's family is one of the few families where all three brothers work in mining within the same company.

His love for the mining region, his love for coal, and his respect for the coal mining profession are what bind him to this land. The coal mining profession has given him a stable life, a secure financial foundation , and joy and happiness in his work. "From a young man starting out in a foreign land with nothing, after many years of tireless effort, I am now proud to have a stable job and life. Back home in Hai Duong, I have a spacious house, and my three children are receiving a good education..." - coal miner Le Van Bien shared.

The stories of coal miners like Thào A Bái from Yên Bái, Đồng Văn Hưng from Đông Triều, and Lê Văn Biên from Hải Dương are also the stories of thousands of young people who have chosen Quảng Ninh as their place of work, choosing coal mining as their profession. Although the work is very arduous, involves frequent shifts, disrupts daily life, leaves little time for wives and children, and sacrifices health, the coal mining profession has given them so much. The greatest and most encouraging achievement for them is their economic well-being.

Clubs of skilled, high-earning miners.

According to TKV (Vietnam Coal Corporation), the number of miners earning over 300 million VND per year has been steadily increasing in recent years. In 2018, the number of miners from 14 underground coal mining companies in the province earning 300 million VND or more was just over 700, but in 2019, this number rose to over 2,600. By 2021, 2022, and the first seven months of 2023, this number continued to increase to 3,000-3,500 people per year. Leading the coal mining companies with the highest-earning miners are Ha Lam Coal Mine, Vang Danh Coal Mine, Mao Khe Coal Mine, Thong Nhat Coal Mine, Uong Bi Coal Mine, etc. Some exemplary workers earn 500 million VND per year, equivalent to an average income of 41 million VND per month.

Coal miner Bui Van Khoa (Mao Khe Coal Company) has built a house and acquired many modern conveniences after 4 years of working as a coal miner.

Mining is indeed a hard and dangerous profession, but year after year, with much effort and innovation in applying new technologies, working conditions have improved, productivity and efficiency have increased 3-4 times compared to before, and incomes for miners have risen.

Machinery and mechanized equipment replace manual labor; miners only need to master the techniques, control the technology, and operate smoothly to achieve high daily productivity. High productivity determines the value of the products they produce in a shift. Therefore, the common traits of skilled, high-earning miners are diligence, a willingness to learn, adherence to procedures, and a lack of shortcuts or carelessness.

In the mines, they are classified as a high-quality workforce, with some mines even establishing clubs for skilled miners – earning high incomes. These miners are a valuable asset to the enterprise and are increasingly working with their intellect rather than manual labor as before. They are also a workforce that coal industry enterprises pay attention to, nurture, and develop.

Leaders of the KT8 Workshop, Mao Khe Coal Company, visited the family of miner Bui Van Khoa.

Every day, after the safety shouts, the miners march underground. Their eight hours of work each day result in the extraction of millions of tons of coal, bringing abundant energy to all sectors of the economy and every region of the country. Each meter of tunnel, each ton of coal, is not only the fruit of their tireless labor but also carries the hopes of tens of thousands of miners for a prosperous life, continuing the spirit of "Discipline and Unity" of the coal miners.
