We visited Do Vu Ha My's family on the occasion when My's parents, Mr. Do Hai Trang (born in 1979) and Mrs. Dang Thi Tham (born in 1985), had just brought her home from the Blood Transfusion - Hematology Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. My's family's small house has always been filled with joy and happiness, but since My developed a serious illness in June 2024, the house has become quiet and heavy. Tears welling up, Mrs. Tham choked up as she recounted that My showed signs of illness while on summer vacation in grade 7, preparing to enter grade 8 at Bui Thi Xuan Secondary School, Nha Trang City. Seeing her daughter showing unusual symptoms such as: mild fever, swollen lymph nodes in the neck, bruises on her arms and legs, and when My was scratched and bleeding uncontrollably, Mrs. Tham was very worried, and together with her husband, they ran around to relatives and friends to take her to the Blood Transfusion - Hematology Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for examination. After consultation and testing, the doctors concluded that My had leukemia. At that moment, the couple felt as if they were struck by lightning, everything before their eyes seemed to collapse completely, they could only hug their child and cry.

According to doctors, the treatment time for this deadly disease is about 5 years and regular monitoring is required to avoid unpredictable complications for children. With each chemotherapy session, My's limbs have difficulty moving, she cannot speak, her mouth is crooked, she has headaches, high fever, vomiting, hair loss...

Although My is entitled to 100% of the medical examination and treatment costs under health insurance, My's family still cannot afford the special medicine because it is not on the list, not to mention the cost of food and travel in Ho Chi Minh City. Currently, the life of Mrs. Tham and her husband is very difficult. Previously, Mr. Trang worked in the maritime transport industry transporting construction materials to Truong Sa, on average he could go home once a month, earning about 20 million VND/month; Mrs. Tham worked as a receptionist for a tourist hotel, until 2021 she suffered a herniated disc and had to be treated for 1 year and quit her job, then worked as a collaborator for a transportation company in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in the form of online sales at home, with a meager income. In addition to the property being the house given by her husband's family, Mrs. Tham and her husband mortgaged the bank to borrow 400 million VND to build 2 rented rooms, hoping to earn more monthly income. Since My got sick, Mrs. Tham and her husband no longer have the means and continue to borrow another 200 million VND from the bank to pay for her treatment. Mr. Trang himself cannot continue to work far away, so he quit his job to conveniently accompany his wife to take care of their daughter. Although they love their child and grandchild, both the paternal and maternal sides can only provide partial support. “My husband and I’s biggest wish right now is for My to be cured of her serious illness soon and hope that the terrible disease does not spread to her bone marrow because it will be very dangerous to her life, along with the treatment costs being many times higher and the money borrowed to treat her has not yet been paid off…” - Mrs. Tham confided.

Although she is seriously ill and suffering from pain, My is very determined, always cheerful and active. My studies very well, is intelligent and draws well. When she had to temporarily put aside going to school during her treatment, My still loves to read books to gain more knowledge with the dream of becoming a doctor to cure children with cancer like My. It is known that on June 12, My continued to go to the Blood Transfusion - Hematology Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for a follow-up examination according to the doctor's regimen.

Knowing My's family situation, teachers at Bui Thi Xuan Secondary School shared material and spiritual support with My in a timely manner. The school's Board of Directors also created conditions for My to reserve this school year according to her family's wishes so that she could focus on treating her illness and soon recover to continue going to class with her friends and teachers. With the encouragement of the class and the school, My's spirit was also more excited.

Mr. Tran Quang Thinh - Vice Chairman of Vinh Nguyen Ward People's Committee said that when learning about the family situation of Mr. Do Hai Trang, the local government promptly visited, encouraged, and supported Do Vu Ha My with gifts on holidays and Tet. In addition, the locality reported to the superior agency to create conditions for My to be considered for support from the Provincial Children's Support Fund with an amount of 3 million VND; guided the family to prepare documents to determine the level of disability for My to receive social benefits and currently, My receives 1 million VND per month for children with severe disabilities. Through Khanh Hoa Newspaper, the locality hopes to have the cooperation of readers near and far, to give more motivation for My to overcome this serious illness...
