Apple has just introduced the iPhone Air, its thinnest phone ever. Surprisingly, instead of making the device more fragile and difficult to repair, Apple has proven the opposite. Thanks to smart changes in design, the iPhone Air is only 5.6 mm thin, while maintaining a significant level of repairability.
One of the key changes is the way Apple has re-arranged the internal components. Most of the space in the middle of the device is devoted to the battery, while the motherboard is placed on top.
According to iFixit , this arrangement not only saves space but also reduces the overlapping of components, which often makes thin devices difficult to disassemble. This allows the device's battery and screen to be more quickly accessible when repairs are needed.
The iPhone Air's 12.26 Wh battery is smaller than some previous iPhone models, but is still optimized to provide all-day battery life. The iPhone maker also uses a dual-port design, making battery replacement more convenient. The battery is secured with electrical adhesive strips, allowing for safe removal and minimizing the risk of damage.

The metal casing surrounding the battery also helps increase durability when removing and replacing. More interestingly, this battery is compatible with Apple's MagSafe battery pack, allowing users more flexibility when it comes to replacement.
Another notable point is that the iPhone Air's USB-C port is designed in a modular form, making the repair process feasible, although quite complicated. Apple uses 3D-printed titanium material for the port cover, which helps reduce material consumption by 33% while ensuring the sturdiness of the thin frame. This is the technology that Apple has applied on the Apple Watch Ultra.
Compared to previous slim smartphones, the iPhone Air shows better durability. Bend tests by technology channels show that the device is less likely to warp when put in a pocket. However, the plastic antenna slots are still vulnerable, showing that Apple is forced to compromise between durability and performance.
To achieve record thinness, Apple also minimized some features. The iPhone Air only has a single rear camera, no secondary speaker like the Plus line. In return, the device is equipped with a C1X modem, N1 Wi-Fi chip and the latest A19 Pro processor, all packaged in a compact motherboard. This simplification both saves space and reduces the risk of damage from complex components.

The iPhone Air shows that Apple is changing its thinking: thin doesn't mean difficult to repair. On the contrary, with streamlined design and new materials, the company has turned an ultra-thin phone into a product that is both durable and maintenance-friendly.
With this design, the iPhone manufacturer has opened a new direction for thin and light devices that still have a longer lifespan, meeting the actual needs of users.
