Real president Perez is the founder of the Super League. |
Mundo Deportivo revealed that after secret negotiations lasting for the past eight months, the Super League organizers came up with the idea of a new tournament format to directly replace the Champions League.
The proposal, if approved, is expected to bring significant changes to Europe's most prestigious tournament. Key points of the proposal include: Starting in 2027, the Super League will have 36 participating teams, divided into two groups.
The top 18 teams will face each other, playing eight high-level matches each. Teams ranked 19-36 will play in a separate group, creating a more balanced match-up.
The knockout stage will still be decided based on points and rankings. All matches will be broadcast on a new online platform that is completely free (with ads), with an ad-free premium subscription option available for a fee.
Barcelona's withdrawal from pressure to push for the Super League project shows a shift in the club's strategy. |
The tournament will continue to be called the Champions League. This proposal marks a major step forward in discussions and negotiations between the Super League and UEFA, but it is not certain that the European Football Federation will give in.
In 2021, the first version of the Super League caused a stir when it brought together 12 of Europe's biggest teams, including 6 clubs from the Premier League. Over time, only Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona publicly supported the idea. Last year, Juventus also publicly withdrew from the project after receiving threats from the Italian Football Federation and Serie A.
In early October, Barcelona became the next big club to withdraw from the Super League project, leaving Real Madrid as the only team to publicly support the tournament.
