The 23-year-old midfielder has missed 25 games since the start of the season due to various injuries. Most notably, he has suffered a recurring groin injury.
Chelsea's playmaker recently wore the captain's armband in the FA Cup quarter-final as the Blues thrashed Port Vale 7-0.

Speaking after the match, Cole Palmer admitted that he was thrilled to wear the captain's armband and felt he was on track to regain his form.
Palmer said: "It feels great. It's been a long time, but it's finally here. It's a proud moment to be captain and I love it."
I feel good, like I've gotten through the difficult phase. Finally, I can shoot the ball and do everything. Now I just need to keep trying and perform even better."
Palmer has only scored 10 goals in all competitions this season, significantly fewer than his 25 goals in his first year at Stamford Bridge and 18 goals last season.
Coach Liam Rosenior proactively gave Palmer a rest when he arrived at the club in order to help the young Englishman regain his best form.
After announcing Cole Palmer as captain, Rosenior explained why he believed it was the next step for the talented midfielder.
Rosenior said: "I think this is a natural progression for Cole at this stage in his career."
Cole Palmer demonstrated leadership qualities. There are many different types of leaders. Some players are articulate and organized.
What Cole did and the way he led the team showed courage. If he made a mistake, he would try to win the ball back and continue playing actively. That's what I want at Chelsea.
