According to Interpol's official website, police have arrested the suspected ringleader and his accomplices, all of whom were wanted internationally under Interpol's red notice. Raids on homes and bars in Mexico rescued eight victims.
According to Interpol, Colombian women, mostly from impoverished areas, were promised jobs as waitresses or hostesses in the popular tourist cities of Cancun and Merida in southeastern Mexico.
However, upon arrival, they were taken to temporary shelters by members of the gang and their passports were confiscated.
The victims were then forced to sign contracts with unpayable debts and repay them by working as prostitutes in bars allegedly owned by the gang leader.
Colombian authorities discovered that the suspected ringleader lived a lavish lifestyle and traveled in high-end armored vehicles with a private security detail. His assets, estimated at over 8 billion Colombian Peso (nearly 1 million Euro), are believed to be direct income from the human trafficking operation.
